Early 1990s
In the early 1990s, the band established a cult following through relentless touring with weekly stops at Virginia clubs known as Trax and Floodzone, an active taping community, and an independent LP, Remember Two Things. (Keyboardist Griesar left the band in 1993, shortly before the release of "Remember Two Things".) After signing to RCA Records, Dave Matthews Band, under the direction of producer Steve Lillywhite, released Under the Table and Dreaming in 1994, a critical and popular smash that firmly established the band's style of pop-rock with improvisational leanings. Under the Table and Dreaming would be the first of three albums released under Lillywhite's direction. This was followed by Crash (1996). For most of America, Crash was the record that put the Dave Matthews Band on the map. Featuring the hit single "Crash Into Me", as well as fan-favorites such as "Two Step", "Tripping Billies", and the Grammy-winning "So Much to Say", Crash would go on to be the band's best selling album.
The Mercy Songfacts reports that Lillywhite lent his skills to their 2012 album Away From The World. Lillywhite hadn't worked with the band since a series of unreleased recordings in 2000, which led to the leaked Lillywhite Sessions.
History
David John Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1967. Two years later, his family moved to Westchester County, NY. His father was a physicist and worked for IBM at the time. He has two sisters (Anne and Jane) and a brother (Peter). After living in New York, his family moved to Cambridge, England in the early '70s. The family returned to New York where his father died in 1977. In 1980, the family moved to South Africa where the young Matthews went to several schools and "got more wise about the evils of government, there and in general." He first played at a club in Charlottesville (Miller's) where he worked as a bartender. He admitted to Playboy magazine that he was really never that good at bartending, but loved getting customers...well..."drunk as hell!" He was first discovered in a demo tape that he recorded with a couple of current band members. This all came about when he decided to put together a demo tape and decided that he needed some musical accompaniment; which ended up as the Dave Matthews Band. In 1994, his sister Anne died in a domestic tragedy at her home in South Africa. The Grammy nominated album "Under The Table and Dreaming" is dedicated to her.
Community
Dave Matthews Band is highly involved in giving a helping hand. In 2003, the Band held a concert entitled, "The Central Park Concert" which was held in New York City's Central Park. The concert helped New York City Public Schools, the band is a big supporter of education.
The band also held a concert that helped victims of Katrina.
Sadly, Leroi Moore passed away in 2008. After being seriously injured in an ATV accident in Virginia, Moore succumbed to his injuries on August 19, 2008. He was replaced by Jeff Coffin, famous for his work with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones.

All Along The Watchtower
Dave Matthews Band Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief
Business men they
Drink my wine
There plowmen dig my earth
Know what any of it's worth
No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many among us
Who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I we've been through all that, yes we have
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hour is getting late
And all along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women all the women all the women came and went
Barefoot servants too
Outside in the cold distance
A wild cat did growl, la la la
Two riders, two riders approaching
The wind began to howl
The thief he take
My money take
The thief he take
My money take
Am I insane
Auf wiedersehen
Am I insane
The thief is safe
No reason to get excited
This song by Dave Matthews Band, "All Along The Watchtower," is a powerful and melancholy realization of the disillusionment and hopelessness that permeated American culture in the 1960s. Bob Dylan originally wrote the song as a response to the political and social chaos that surrounded him, particularly in relation to the Vietnam War. It has since become an iconic protest song, with its mournful harmonica and winding guitar riffs.
The opening lines of the song, "There must be some way out of here / Said the joker to the thief / There's too much confusion / I can't get no relief," reflect the singer's sense of frustration and despair at the world around him. He sees the powerful, represented by the princes in the watchtower, succeeding while the rest of the world suffers. The reference to the "barefoot servants" underscores the deep social inequality that existed at the time. The song shifts between a first-person narrator speaking to a second-person interlocutor and third-person descriptions of the world around them, which creates a sense of distance from the singer's pain.
The final lines of the song, "Am I insane / The thief is safe / No reason to get excited," highlight the sense of powerlessness that the singer feels. He has been robbed, both literally and metaphorically, and there is nothing he can do about it. The repetition of "Am I insane" suggests that the singer questions his own sanity in the face of an unjust world. The song leaves the listener with a sense of unresolved tension, as the two riders approach and the wind begins to howl.

Ok...some of this sounds Bot-ish...
You never heard this band?
25 yrs touring...One of the most successful touring Bands, World Wide, a Modern Day Grateful Dead???
And you never heard of this band???
Doesn't sound believable and the person who (supposedly) claiming DMB is on par with The Beatles is outta they're mind...
Come on, The Beatles changed music and Culture...I've been a DMB fan for almost 30 yrs...
The Dave Matthews Band is great, incredibly talented...seen them live but comparing them to The Beatles is a bit ridiculous...
2 different bands...
DMB is about The Tour...they kill on the Studio also...amazing stuff...
The Beatles, just studio work alone leaves no comparison....
Touring??? see how that started a phenomena...
Dave packs a house...remember also he's doing it in the 90s...
The 60s had none of the sound tech to get a Beatle show down...ever hear a Beatles Show live???
You cant....lol
Fenton wasn't born yet when they still touring when The Fab 4 were touring so saying DMB is as good or better than The Beatles us absurd...
Best album(s)
DMB:
BTCS
UTTAD
CRASH
The Beatles:
Rubber Soul
Revolver
Let It Be
I haven't counted Sgt. Pepper in There.

Songs on those Albums changed how music was recorded...
Instruments never used in Pop Music were introduced popular music.

Harpsichord
Hip Hop, Sampling started during this run of albums...Beatles did it 1st...
The Term World Music begins with The Beatles...
Oh yea, they were 1st to perform via Sattelite across The World...

"All You Need Is Love"
Ok, now DMB....
Amazing Tour Band.
Great Songs of great albums but nowhere on par with The Beatles...
