Early 1990s
In the early 1990s, the band established a cult following through relentless touring with weekly stops at Virginia clubs known as Trax and Floodzone, an active taping community, and an independent LP, Remember Two Things. (Keyboardist Griesar left the band in 1993, shortly before the release of "Remember Two Things".) After signing to RCA Records, Dave Matthews Band, under the direction of producer Steve Lillywhite, released Under the Table and Dreaming in 1994, a critical and popular smash that firmly established the band's style of pop-rock with improvisational leanings. Under the Table and Dreaming would be the first of three albums released under Lillywhite's direction. This was followed by Crash (1996). For most of America, Crash was the record that put the Dave Matthews Band on the map. Featuring the hit single "Crash Into Me", as well as fan-favorites such as "Two Step", "Tripping Billies", and the Grammy-winning "So Much to Say", Crash would go on to be the band's best selling album.
The Mercy Songfacts reports that Lillywhite lent his skills to their 2012 album Away From The World. Lillywhite hadn't worked with the band since a series of unreleased recordings in 2000, which led to the leaked Lillywhite Sessions.
History
David John Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1967. Two years later, his family moved to Westchester County, NY. His father was a physicist and worked for IBM at the time. He has two sisters (Anne and Jane) and a brother (Peter). After living in New York, his family moved to Cambridge, England in the early '70s. The family returned to New York where his father died in 1977. In 1980, the family moved to South Africa where the young Matthews went to several schools and "got more wise about the evils of government, there and in general." He first played at a club in Charlottesville (Miller's) where he worked as a bartender. He admitted to Playboy magazine that he was really never that good at bartending, but loved getting customers...well..."drunk as hell!" He was first discovered in a demo tape that he recorded with a couple of current band members. This all came about when he decided to put together a demo tape and decided that he needed some musical accompaniment; which ended up as the Dave Matthews Band. In 1994, his sister Anne died in a domestic tragedy at her home in South Africa. The Grammy nominated album "Under The Table and Dreaming" is dedicated to her.
Community
Dave Matthews Band is highly involved in giving a helping hand. In 2003, the Band held a concert entitled, "The Central Park Concert" which was held in New York City's Central Park. The concert helped New York City Public Schools, the band is a big supporter of education.
The band also held a concert that helped victims of Katrina.
Sadly, Leroi Moore passed away in 2008. After being seriously injured in an ATV accident in Virginia, Moore succumbed to his injuries on August 19, 2008. He was replaced by Jeff Coffin, famous for his work with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones.

The Song That Jane Likes
Dave Matthews Band Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll come back again
Torching time talking rhymes in
I'll come back again
Would you like to play
With the thought of a friend
In a distant passing stage
With your hands up and out
So resigned you will fall down
While you around here play
Wild on the warm and far away
While you around here play
The days keep scribbling themselves in tidy lines
Would you like to play
With a fool holding hands
With a one-eyed jack of spades
While on the deck they sing
All of the captain's cards are kings
Still he and the queen are lost at sea
I hope it isn't you or me
And I'll be back 'round again
Yes I'll walk in time with you old friend
And we'll find that place
That we had danced in so long ago
And in plays to write the wire in
I'll come back again
Torching time talking rhymes in
I'll come back again
With this resigned the letter I sign
The Song That Jane Likes by Dave Matthews Band is a song that is open to interpretation. It is said that the song is about a girl named Jane, who enjoys a unique style of music. The singer of the song is enamored with Jane's love for this music, and talks about how he would like to come back to be with Jane and listen to this music once again.
The song talks about playing with thoughts of a friend, while lying around with hands up and out, and feeling resigned to fall down. It talks about playing wild, while the days keep scribbling themselves in tidy lines. This could mean the monotony of everyday life, and yearning for something new and exciting.
The lyrics of the song become more interesting as they speak of playing with a fool holding hands, with a one-eyed jack of spades, while on the deck they sing, all of the captain's cards are kings. The singer hopes it isn't he or Jane, who are lost at sea. The song ends with the singer expressing the desire to come back, write the wire and torching time while talking rhymes, and finding that place where he had danced with Jane a long time ago.

And in plays to write the wire in
I'll return to my creative pursuits
I'll come back again
I will return to this place
Torching time talking rhymes in
Spending time creating and sharing poetry
Would you like to play
Are you interested in joining me?
With the thought of a friend
In the company of a companion
In a distant passing stage
In a place far removed from this reality
While you lie around
While you relax and do nothing
With your hands up and out
You've given up and surrendered
So resigned you will fall down
Your lack of action will lead to failure
Wild on the warm and far away
Actively enjoying life in a distant and inviting place
The days keep scribbling themselves in tidy lines
Time passes quickly and methodically
With a fool holding hands
Being led by someone who doesn't know better
With a one-eyed jack of spades
Being guided by someone deceitful
All of the captain's cards are kings
Those in power hold all the cards
Still he and the queen are lost at sea
Even with all the power, they are still adrift
I hope it isn't you or me
I hope we're not the ones lost at sea
And I'll be back 'round again
I'll return once more
Yes I'll walk in time with you old friend
I'll catch up with you after all this time
And we'll find that place
And we'll return to our happy place
That we had danced in so long ago
That we enjoyed together in the past
With this resigned the letter I sign
I accept things as they are and move forward

Yeah
How was it?
We know we've not been here before
Maybe only hear that one tune
That's been bubbling over the air for a while but uh
But we're grateful for y'all being here, man
It's freaking me out, come all the way over here
Other side of the country, and y'all are standing here
'Cause you wanna check it out
