1999
Dave Pearce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Crash on the levee, mama
Water's gonna overflow
Swamp's gonna rise
No boat's gonna row
Now, you can train on down
To Williams Point
You can bust your feet
You can rock this joint
But oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.

Now, don't you try an' move me
You're just gonna lose
There's a crash on the levee
And mama, you've been refused
Well, it's sugar for sugar
And salt for salt
If you go down in the flood
It's gonna be your own fault
Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.

Well, that high tide's risin'
Mama, don't you let me down
Pack up your suitcase
Mama, don't you make a sound
Now, it's king for king
Queen for queen
It's gonna be the meanest flood
That anybody's seen
Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?

You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dave Pearce's song 1999 paint a rather bleak picture - one of impending doom, where nature is about to wreak havoc on the world. The opening lines, "Crash on the levee, mama, water's gonna overflow, swamp's gonna rise, no boat's gonna row", set the tone for the rest of the song. The song speaks about the impending flood, and the fact that there's nothing anyone can do about it. The verse talks about how people can try to escape the flood, but it's not going to matter - they're going to have to find a way to deal with it.

The chorus features the powerful repetition of the line "Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now? You're gonna have to find yourself another best friend, somehow", which highlights the desperation and loss that people will feel when the flood inevitably hits. It's a bleak picture of the future, but one that also highlights the resilience of humanity.

Overall, the lyrics of Dave Pearce's song 1999 are evocative and thought-provoking. They speak to a potential future that is both terrifying and yet oddly fascinating, and the repetition of the chorus drives home the emotional impact of the impending flood.

I was at this event in the Merchant City, it was hectic, probably the best night I ever had in Glasgow, over 100000 in the city and dace music stages in almost every corner you turned, the streets were thronged with people and me and about ten of my mates (boys and girls) staggered around for hours completely smashed and loving life for what it was, all about the pumping trance...........!

Takes me back 20 years when I used to commute from Salisbury to Paignton on a Friday evening and return Sunday evening. DP was on Friday night, setting us up for the weekend, and then Sunday, easing us back towards the work week. IMHO Dave Pearce was the best DJ Radio 1 ever had. And I've been around since R1 started in 1967. I'm 60 now but I still love listening to Trance mixes like this.
