One of my favorite songs from David Gates and Bread next to Aubrey, Make it With You, and Guitar Man...but how can you not fall in love and surrender your heart to the one you love, while your soul slips away into beautiful songs written by groups like Bread and many others during that time? I myself can never get enough of music like this to feed my soul...there are no singer/song writers left today who possess this special gift and passion for love songs. I've loved Bread ever since I was in my early teens. Am now 61, ten years younger than David Gates, who is still singing his wonderful music. I will never grow tired of this incredible music. Fantastic singer/songwriter. The words of the songs are like poetry and tug at the heart strings.

My daughter loves hearing my stories of growing up in 1970s Sydney. On a wide social scale there were huge problems, but for us kids it was fun and freedom. I'm glad I was there too, enjoying the amazing music on my transistor radio.

Clearly remember hearing Johnnie Walker playing this on his 1-3pm show on Radio One in January 1973. I would listen at school from 1-2 on my transistor radio with the one ear piece. What happy days they were.

And you didn't need to belong to a band with an endless supply of drugs and groupies to provide inspiration for such timeless music. It was only recently that I found out David Gates and his wife lived a mere 20 miles or so from where I lived on Whidbey Island, WA, and he and his wife are two of the most down-to-earth, nicest people you'll ever meet -- with great stories and tremendous memories to share about his most successful moments in his musical career. He kept it real and under the radar -- for the sake of their four kids, so they wouldn't have to deal with the corruption and corrosiveness of fame and fortune that often befall families of famous people. These two people are folks to emulate and look up to, and it's just a bonus that David was one of the best songwriters America has ever produced.

I keep wondering how they did it, as it certainly provided material for songs like this. I watched footage from a concert from London, and enjoyed the mellow feel, appreciation of the band members, and lack of stage antics. I felt bad that despite Dave and Jimmy having similar voices, the label favored David, as the two harmonized so well. Jimmy seemed to excel at trouble-in-love songs.

Oh, I must not forget Charlie Rich, Linda Ronstadt, Helen Reddy, Olivia Newton-John, Seals and Croft, Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, Cat Stevens and Jim Croce.
All of those 1970s songs/artists have long vanished, or have now been extinct on the A.M. commercial radio stations for thirty six years now.
And now....., the A.M. radio stations these days, have been overrun by news/talk, sports, and young peoples music. What a drag for us older adults who want to listen to decent, and sensible music.
But, don't despair folks, all of those songs have been resurrected, and now heard on YouTube and satellite radio, for our listening pleasures.

On this day in 1972 {November 5th} "Sweet Surrender" by Bread entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #55; and 7 weeks later on December 24th, 1972 it peaked at #15 {for 1 week} and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100...
Their record that succeeded it on the Top 100, "Aubrey", also peaked at #15 and also stayed on the chart for 11 weeks...
Between June 1970 and April 1977 the quartet had thirteen Top 100 records; six made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Make It With You" for one week in 1970...
They just missed having a seventh Top 10 record when "Guitar Man" peaked at #11 in 1972...
Sadly, three members of the group have passed away; guitarist Jimmy Griffin {1943 - 2005}, drummer Mike Botts {1944 - 2005} and Larry Knechtel {1940 - 2009, he replaced bassist Robb Royer in 1971}...

I miss those times. Nothing like today. I remember sitting on a street bench talking to a guy I met that night where I used to hang. I lived in a huge city and we plopped down on this bench after we got out of his van and had the most passionate kiss on that city bench with the sun coming up. The seventies. What a romantic time. I was just learning to drive when this song came out!!! I remember I would fill up the car with 5 dollars!! Then I would just drive around hoping a BREAD song would come on the radio!!! Man, those were some great times back then!!!

Boy I love this song... Probably my all time favorite song from BREAD and they have a whole catalog of smash hits...Everytime I hear this song it brings a tear to my eye because it reminds me so much of my dearly departed girlfriend who passed away from Covid19 a little over a year ago...When we became boyfriend and girlfriend it was definitely a sweet surrender on my part...R.I.P. babe...😭😥😢...
