Sweet Surrender
David & Bread Gates Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby I'm through runnin' it's true
I'd be a fool to try to escape you
Maybe I'm beat but oh what a sweet surrender

You keep your rights, I'll take your nights
No one can lose when we turn the lights out
Tastin' defeat, lovin' that sweet surrender
I'm givin' up myself to you but I didn't really lose at all
I gave the only love I've known and it never hurt me to fall

Now that it's done, so glad you won

I know our lives have only begun now
No more retreat, only my sweet surrender

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David & Bread Gates's song Sweet Surrender are about giving in to love and how it can bring great joy and satisfaction. The song's first verse reveals the artist's decision to stop running from the person they love and submit to their feelings. The second line of the verse emphasizes that trying to escape love is foolish, suggesting that it will always find a way to catch up with us. The chorus asserts that surrendering to love is sweet, even if it might seem like a defeat, implying that losing control to someone we love can still be fulfilling.

In the second verse of the lyrics, the artist suggests that both partners benefit when they share their love. When we turn the lights out, there is no right or wrong, no one is a loser or a winner; both parties enjoy the blissful surrender of their emotional and physical selves. The final lines repeat the idea that surrendering to love is not a loss but rather a positive outcome. The artist expresses gratitude for their partner's love and the beginning of a new life together, indicating that they are ready to leave behind their past and embrace a future marked only by joy and surrender.

I'm sure a lot of music critics especially Rolling Stone magazine dismissed Bread as a lightweight soft rock band but I'm sure they have a whole slew of fans who love their music...No matter what this band definitely deserves a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...🎤🥁🎸🎹

@adriennecaldwelldogtraining

They were my introduction to music at 8 years of age.

@@adriennecaldwelldogtraining Ty for your positive feedback and Yes,"BREAD'S music will always stand the rest of time no matter what...👋👋👋

@whitneyrichardson5508

Do people respect Rolling Stone magazine and for that matter, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anymore (even if they did in the past)?

@petegarza2025

@@whitneyrichardson5508 I don't know about Rolling Stones magazine but I do know that the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME has lost all credibility and lost respect because they have have NOT included "BOSTON"... "BADFINGER"..."THIN LIZZY" and "BREAD" into the RRHOF but they have included "WHITNEY HOUSTON" ..."DOLLY PARTON" who I absolutely adore and this year "WILLIE NELSON" all 3 or these artists have nothing to do with Rock and Roll and let's not forget about the "CARPENTERS"...The RRHOF is a nothing but a JOKE 🤣🤣🤣

I was 15 years old when this song came out. My sister and I had records by Bread. Their music was awesome, not like today. These guys were talented. I am 64 years old now and I still love this song.
