Michele
David & Jonathan Lyrics

I got home tonight, I guess I needed to unwind
Put the world on hold awhile, take my worries off my mind
I turned on the screen, and began to type in your names
Time after time I still, am in love with every frame

Hello Venice Beach, well my troubles they were soon erased
The magic of my favorite scenes, brought a smile to my face
Life has demands, sometimes from the time we wake
Tell me what it is you do, when you just need to escape

Romy and Michele, you played a supporting role
In my life what a delight, from the screen you touched my soul
For that I thank you, and silly humor laugh I do
And you made your own outfits, I was thirty once like you

Now I've got some friends, who don't get you or get the jokes
A divide that can't be crossed, different strokes for different folks
Ah but I've got a few, who adore you just like I do
Two types of people in this world, those who do and don't love you, I said a

Romy and Michele, you've played a supporting role
In my life what a delight, from the screen you touched my soul
For that I thank you, and silly humor laugh I do
You're both the Mary in my book, I was thirty once like you

Some are quick to say shallow
Or maybe let, their eyes roll
Well they don't know

Ah the lessons they abound
Pearls of wisdom, can be found
In what unfolds

Don't you lie now to impress
Fashion's everything oh yes
Above all teach us you do
To thine self be true

Romy and Michele, you played a supporting role
In my life what a delight, from the screen you touched my soul
For that I thank you, and silly humor laugh I do
The simple joy of folding scarves, I was thirty once like you

Romy and Michele, you played a supporting role
In my life what a delight, from the screen you touched my soul
For that I thank you, and silly humor laugh I do
Would you have this dance with me, I was thirty once like you

Overall Meaning

The song "Michele" by David & Jonathan is an ode to the characters Romy and Michele from the movie "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion." The singer begins by describing their need to unwind and escape from the world. They turn on the screen, likely referring to watching the movie or perhaps searching for content related to the characters. The singer expresses their love for every frame and how it brings a smile to their face, highlighting the magic of their favorite scenes.

The next verse mentions Venice Beach and how watching Romy and Michele's adventures there helps erase the singer's troubles. The mention of life's demands and the question of what to do when one needs to escape suggests that the characters provide a form of escapism for the singer. Romy and Michele serve as a source of inspiration and distraction when the weight of life becomes too much.

The lyrics then proceed to describe how some of the singer's friends may not understand or appreciate Romy and Michele in the same way they do. There is a divide between those who appreciate the characters' humor and those who don't. However, the singer takes solace in the fact that they have a few friends who adore Romy and Michele just like they do, emphasizing the differing tastes and preferences of individuals.

The final verse delves into the deeper lessons that can be learned from Romy and Michele's story. The mention of quick judgments and shallow opinions reflects the criticism often faced by those who enjoy things that are labeled as shallow or frivolous. However, the singer asserts that there are pearls of wisdom and lessons to be found in what unfolds on the screen. They highlight the importance of being true to oneself, a lesson they attribute to Romy and Michele.

Overall, "Michele" is a heartfelt expression of gratitude and admiration for the characters Romy and Michele. They are seen as supporting roles in the singer's life, bringing delight and laughter into their world. The song celebrates their unique humor, the joy they bring, and the lessons they impart, all while acknowledging the varying opinions of others.

"Rubber Soul" predated FM radio in the US, so album cuts did not get airplay; you had to play the album to hear any song not released as a 45 RPM single. Several artists--usually "one hit wonders" in the states--had hits here with Beatles covers: The Silkie, "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away", Underground Sunshine, "Birthday" and this beautifully faithful rendition of "Michelle" among them.

The first time I ever heard "Michelle," it was this version. I thought it was the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard. When I heard that it was a Beatles song, I was really excited. I like the Beatles version better.
