He also continued acting; his roles included Major Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth (1986), Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), among other film and television appearances and cameos. One of the most interesting things about this song, and the entire album was how it was recorded.
They basically gathered a bunch of musicians into a Berlin studio. And the producer said just go ahead and do whatever you want. Make it up and we'll record it.
And for this particular song from what I remember reading, most of the Bass track was recorded before Brian Eno asked Robert fripp and Bowie to work on the rest of it.
At the time for it was an excellent guitarist and well known for his work with King crimson. A have decent progressive rock band at the time, but they never gained true popularity like Yes or or other bands at the genre. But there's no denying that Robert brought the key influence into the song with his use of massive sustain and distortion. Brian Eno ate it up and made an effort to make sure that that sound occurred through the entire song.
While Bowie didn't even bother working the lyrics. When he was set up to sing the song, he just winged it out of the air. And saying whatever came to his mind at the time. Now anybody who can understand the environment that the song was recorded in can put a context to the song.
The song was recorded a few weeks before the Berlin Wall fell. He had spent time with an unnamed woman during that period and he drew is inspiration from that relationship. This is pretty much common knowledge on Wikipedia.
But what I find the most interesting as a musician songwriter vocalist blah blah blah blah blah, is the fact that he didn't plan it out. According to all accounts he walked up to the microphone and made the lyrics up on the spot as it was being recorded live for the first time.
I mean I'm a great lyricist. But I cannot do what he did. He just walked up to the microphone and saying lyrics that are 50 years later incredibly dominant in the concept of vocalization and the concepts of lyric writing.
Just the simple lyric, "We can be Heros", is such an emotionally powerful statement. It represents the concept that a simple person can make such a difference in the world by committing a simple act.
I have always said that heroes are not made by their training. In other words police are trained to handle situations, fireman are trained to walk into fire burning buildings, EMTs are trained walking to life-threatening situations and take action.
They are not heroes because they were trained. They learned the lessons that science has taught to perform the duties to the best of the their ability.
Heroes are people who have no training. They see a simple situation. They see people's lives in danger. And without any regard for their own safety they rise to the occasion. A directly attacked the problem with little regard for their own personal safety.
And again I will reiterate people have no training, no expertise and above all they have no fear. They are not worried about their own personal being, their concerned with the lives of people in life threatening situations.
Those are the real heroes.
