Ashes to Ashes
by David Bowie

Do you remember a guy that's been
In such an early song?
I've heard a rumor from Ground Control
Oh no, don't say it's true

They got a message from the Action Man
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too
I've loved all I've needed, love
Sordid details following"

The shrieking of nothing is killing, just
Pictures of Jap girls in synthesis and I
Ain't got no money and I ain't got no hair
But I'm hoping to kick but the planet it's glowing

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low

Time and again I tell myself
I'll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following me
Oh no, not again
I'm stuck with a valuable friend
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too"
One flash of light but no smoking pistol

I never done good things (I never done good things)
I never done bad things (I never done bad things)
I never did anything out of the blue, woh-o-oh
Want an axe to break the ice
Wanna come down right now

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low

My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom

My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom

My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom

My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom

Ashes to Ashes was from the era when Bowie was coming out of his what he admits ,were his dark drug days. Major Tom is a continuing reference to himself. Perhaps he felt that Major Tom was who he was , used to be or will always be. The bulldozer is perhaps a metaphor for burying his past ,his clown character may suggest he considered himself a fool.
The spaceman reference is a recurring theme in his work. Ziggy Stardust was from another world and Starman was his first real hit.Space Oddity is perhaps one of the most moving love songs ever.He talks alot of Major Tom in this song and his relationship to himself and others.
Watch Blackstar, perhaps his last video, and see who shows up; Major Tom , in a damaged spacesuit that sports a happy face sticker. When the visor is opened we see that the man inside the suit is now a skeleton.
A superb artist , a fascinating body of work and by all accounts a genuine human being. God speed Mr Bowie.

Thank you. My husband passed on 2/22/20 and he had an amazing ability to tell me about songs and their meaning. Miss him terribly, but your post was a lovely reminder of the good times.

Just discovering Bowie. I can't pin down his genre of music, but I love it. Or, and I love it.

Thank you so much for your comment, was just what I was looking for. Was going to Google it, but had a hunch I'd find just what I needed here. 🙏 X

Urbmeister Aha Nope. Weed was never his couple of tea. Not to mention,"you"normally call junkies to heavy drugs users, not to some potheads.
You're just talking about a cannabis strain named as a tribute to David Bowie in a recent past.

Mayor Tom was the name for Marihuana. So yes he was singing about marihuana.

He died around the same time, as my Dad and Alan Rickmann. It's a nice suggestion, to think they met perhaps at the gate...
