Blue Jean
David Bowie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue Jean, I just met me a girl named Blue Jean
Blue Jean, she got a camouflaged face and no money
Remember they always let you down when you need 'em
Oh, Blue Jean, is heaven any sweeter than Blue Jean?
She got a police bike
She got a turned-up nose

Sometimes I feel like (oh, the whole human race)
Jazzin' for Blue Jean (oh, and when my Blue Jean's blue)
Blue Jean can send me (oh, somebody send me)
Somebody send me (oh, somebody send me)

One day I'm gonna write a poem in a letter
One day I'm gonna get that faculty together
Remember that everybody has to wait in line
Blue Jean, look out world, you know I've got mine
She got Latin roots
She got everything

Sometimes I feel like (oh, the whole human race)
Jazzin' for Blue Jean (oh, and when my Blue Jean's blue)
Blue Jean can send me (oh, somebody send me)
Somebody send me (oh, somebody send me)

Sometimes I feel like (oh, the whole human race)
Jazzin' for Blue Jean (oh, and when my Blue Jean's blue)
Blue Jean can send me (oh, somebody send me)
Somebody send me (oh, somebody send me)

Somebody, somebody (oh, somebody send me)
Somebody send me (oh, somebody send me)

Overall Meaning

David Bowie's song "Blue Jean" is a song about a woman named Blue Jean whom he has just met. She's not particularly well-off, with a "camouflaged face and no money." However, Bowie still feels a magnetic attraction to her. He compares her to heaven and declares that he's got her - "look out world, you know I've got mine." He also mentions that she has a police bike and Latin roots, which adds to her mystique.

The chorus of the song repeats a few times, with Bowie expressing his feelings for Blue Jean and asking someone to send her to him. He hints at being willing to do things for her, such as write her a poem in a letter, and also acknowledges that everyone has to wait in line.

Overall, "Blue Jean" is a fun and catchy tribute to a girl who may not have everything, but has captured Bowie's attention nonetheless.

When Bowie played the Paramount Theater in Seattle in 1997, he picked up a light and shined it on the crowd, just like in this video. We waived and hollered when he aimed it at us, up in the balcony. David Bowie shined a spotlight on me.

@rachelmcneill6734

thats definitely a night to remember!

@MusicBySHOW

That was Bowie's genius! In a way, he shined a spotlight on all of us.
