Heroes
David Bowie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be heroes, just for one day

And you, you can be mean
And I, I'll drink all the time
'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes, we're lovers, and that is that

Though nothing will keep us together
We could steal time, just for one day
We can be heroes forever and ever
What'd you say?

I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing, nothing will keep us together
We can beat them forever and ever
Oh, we can be heroes, just for one day

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day

I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing, by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns shot above our heads (over our heads)
And we kissed as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame was on the other side
Oh, we can beat them, forever and ever
Then we could be heroes, just for one day

We can be heroes
We can be heroes
We can be heroes
Just for one day
We can be heroes

We're nothing, and nothing will help us

Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay
But we could be safer, just for one day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Bowie's song Heroes seem to be about two individuals who come from different backgrounds, but are united through their love for each other. They are aware that the world may try to tear them apart with its prejudices and problems, but they refuse to give up on each other. They find solace in the fact that, even if it's only for one day, they can be heroes.

The opening verse, "I, I will be king/ And you, you will be queen/ Though nothing will drive them away," suggests a sense of determination and defiance of the societal boundaries that would try to keep them apart. The chorus, "We can be heroes, just for one day," offers a reminder that a brief moment of bravery and love can change everything, at least temporarily. The second verse, "And you, you can be mean/ And I, I'll drink all the time/ 'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact/ Yes, we're lovers, and that is that," indicates that they will stick together through thick and thin, regardless of what they may face.

In the bridge, Bowie's clever use of metaphor is evident with the lines, "I, I wish you could swim/ Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim/ Though nothing, nothing will keep us together," as they suggest that they may be better off as creatures of the sea, far away from humanity's problems. However, they keep fighting against all odds, "And the shame was on the other side/ Oh, we can beat them, forever and ever/ Then we could be heroes, just for one day."
