Look Back In Anger
David Bowie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"You know who I am," he said
The speaker was an angel
He coughed and shook his crumpled wings
Closed his eyes and moved his lips
"It's time we should be going"

(Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so)
Look back in anger, driven by the night
Till you come
(Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so)
Look back in anger, see it in my eyes
Till you come

No one seemed to hear him
So he leafed through a magazine
And, yawning, rubbed the sleep away
Very sane he seemed to me

(Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so)
Look back in anger, driven by the night
Till you come
(Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so)
Look back in anger, feel it in my voice
Till you come

(Waiting so long, ahhh...)
(Waiting so long, I've been waiting so, waiting so) (repeat ad inf.)

Overall Meaning

David Bowie's Look Back in Anger is a complex work that delves deeply into the theme of alienation and the struggle for self-discovery. The lyrics are loaded with vivid imagery as the singer portrays an angel who has come to deliver an important message but is ignored by everyone around him.

The opening lines, "You know who I am," he said / The singer was an angel" sets the stage for the discourse to come. The angel, who represents a beacon of hope and guidance, is ignored and ridiculed by those he has come to reach. The reference to his "crumpled wings" and "closed eyes" is a metaphor for his exhaustion and frustration at being rejected by humanity. The angel speaks about how it is time to move on, but his message falls on deaf ears.

The chorus "Look back in anger, driven by the night till you come" reiterates the theme of the song, that is, the struggle for self-discovery. The phrase "driven by the night" represents the dark corners of the soul, the hidden parts of one's being that must be explored to truly understand oneself. The song implies that through introspection and reflection, one can move one step closer to becoming fully realized.

I love how urgent this song sounds, like he's trying to get it all out of his system as efficiently as he can. it's so busy with all the percussion, and the guitar riffs are so uplifting

"Proto" grunge possibly
when he played it in concerts in the 90s, it was definitely "grunged up"

One of my favourite David Bowie songs. "Lodger" is such an underrated masterpiece, in my opinion. :)
