Love Is Lost
David Bowie Lyrics

It's the darkest hour, you're twenty two
The voice of youth, the hour of dread
The darkest hour and your voice is new
Love is lost, lost is love

Your country's new
Your friends are new
Your house and even your eyes are new
Your maid is new and your accent too
But your fear is as old as the world

Say goodbye to the thrills of life
Where love was good, no love was bad
Wave goodbye to the life without pain
Say hello
You're a beautiful girl

Say hello to the lunatic men
Tell them your secrets
They're like the grave
Oh, what have you done?
Oh, what have you done?
Love is lost, lost is love

You know so much, it's making you cry
You refuse to talk but you think like mad
You've cut out your soul and the face of thought
Oh, what have you done?
Oh, what have you done?

Oh, what have you done?
Oh, what have you done?

Let's play 'spot the references':
0:10 Thin White Duke from Station to Station
0:12 "Heroes" record on the wall
0:20 Pierrot from Scary Monsters and Super Creeps
0:32 "Bowie" with another Pierrot costume, face projection technique that he's used on other videos including "Little Wonder", "I Can't Read", and a few more I can't remember.
2:14 Bowie's used this concept of holding himself in past projects, the most prominent being the cover of Hours... What I find interesting is that a character from `76 is holding a character from `80. Seems a bit backwards. Also, why doesn't Pierrot have much of a face?
2:55 The main melody of his song "Ashes to Ashes".

It's really good. I wonder if the fact that we keep seeing Bowie's face projected on canvases means something. Like I said, he's done it before, but I feel like it's supposed to represent an idea. His insistence on making references to his past is also really interesting for an artist who is so forward-looking. I know he's done that before but it's really out in full swing with this album.

The Next Day is the retrospective of his life, Blackstar is the foreshadowing of his death. One of the greatest artist of recent history!

Martin McDonald

One of the greatest artist in history.

The synth/keyboard sound in this song is really cool, it’s great how he can use a minimalist beat so effectively. As some others said, this music video looks like an artful way to communicate how the characters he created almost became their own people, and he can never really escape their shadow, even when he wants to embrace different styles.

I always thought this song was a very personal one, about his early career - with lines like 'even your eyes are new'. I interpret this as Bowie saying 'I've well and truly washed my hands of these characters; no matter how much I try to be rid of them, you keep applauding them and harking back to them, but they are not who I really am.' Powerful stuff. It's a great video.
I find watching Bowie wash his hands weirdly fascinating, if only for the sake of going 'look it's really him! He's doing something ordinary! He really was one of us!'
