Quicksand
by David Bowie

I'm closer to the Golden Dawn
Immersed in Crowley's uniform
Of imagery
I'm living in a silent film
Portraying Himmler's sacred realm
Of dream reality
I'm frightened by the total goal
Drawing to the ragged hole
And I ain't got the power anymore
No, I ain't got the power anymore

I'm the twisted name on Garbo's eyes
Living proof of Churchill's lies, I'm destiny
I'm torn between the light and dark
Where others see their targets, divine symmetry
Should I kiss the viper's fang?
Or herald loud the death of Man
I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore

Don't believe in yourself, don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes with death's release
Aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah

I'm not a prophet or a stone-age man
Just a mortal with the potential of a superman
I'm living on
I'm tethered to the logic of Homo Sapien
Can't take my eyes from the great salvation
Of bullshit faith
If I don't explain what you ought to know
You can tell me all about it on the next Bardo
I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore

Don't believe in yourself, don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes with death's release
Aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah

Don't believe in yourself, don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes with death's release
Aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah

One of the reason's Hunky Dory is such an interesting album is that it was the last album Bowie did before becoming a mega star. When Ziggy Stardust resonated with people, he became a god-like figure. Nobody looked at Bowie like a normal guy ever again. Every Bowie album Ziggy Stardust and onwards were coming from more than a man. That obviously has its appealing factors as we all know. But Hunky Dory features an intimacy and a vulnerableness we wouldn't see from Bowie in a similar way ever again. It was an album from a guy who was down on his luck; Bowie's like us at this point of his life. This is the final album from David Jones. I find the historical context interesting. It's songs from a regular guy on the brink of something great: he has no idea that his life will never be the same again: he has no idea that a guy like him is going to change the world.

Wow, yes, thank you for these amazing insights, it makes total sense. There was a brilliant documentary about him not long after he passed, but i don't recall this particular aspect came up during their coverage of his many phases and personas. Such deep and beguiling lyrics and harmony in this incredible composition. I cant help thinking of the love guru film with austin powers tho... Into me i see (™), ha ha ! Thanks for sharing.

Rest in peace David.

The greatest artist pop music ever knew.
Can't express my love for you and your influence upon me enough.
Space Oddity was the first thing I ever learned on guitar.
Life On Mars was the first single I ever played.

Saddest day.
