Good and Evil
David Byrne Lyrics

Caught you walkin' like a gangster
Saw you grabbin' the controls
Now you're almost outta batteries
You gotta sweater much too small

Pokin' at your navel
Pointin? your finger too
You say your lips don't even stick together
When the dust comes up
Blowin' 'cross the plains
Pictures fallin' in and outta their frames!

Good and evil, good and evil
They turned 'em loose, they turned into people
Good and evil, good and evil
They turned 'em loose, they turned into people
You know that roses and lilacs are funky too ?
Let 'em go at it, let's see what they do
Now we're wrestlin' with the forces of good and evil
They turned 'em loose, they turned into people

I have seen you do things backward
You don't believe a word I say
Now you're holdin' sticky paper
Money never fades away

Talkin' like a monster
Smellin' like a baby
You got a head like a bowl full of cherries
So don't be surprised
You got what it takes
Messin' round like monkeys and apes

Good and evil, good and evil
They turned 'em loose, they turned into people
Good and evil, good and evil
They turned 'em loose, they turned into people
You know that roses and lilacs are funky too ?
Let 'em go at it, let's see what they do

Now we're wrestlin' with the forces of good and evil
They turned 'em loose, they turned into people

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Byrne's "Good and Evil" talks about the duality of human nature and how it can transform an individual. The song starts with the persona addressing someone they saw walking like a gangster and grabbing controls. The person is almost out of batteries and wearing a sweater that is too small. The persona then goes on to say that the person pokes their navel and points their finger, and insists their lips don't stick together when dust blows across the plains, causing pictures to fall in and out of their frames.

The chorus then comes in, with Byrne singing about how good and evil have been turned loose and turned into people, and that we're now wrestling with the forces of good and evil. This line implies that at the core of every person is the potential for both good and evil, and it is up to us to decide which side to embrace.

As the song continues, the persona says they have seen the person they're addressing doing things backward and not believing a word they say. The person is now holding sticky paper, with money never fading away. The persona compares the person to a monster that smells like a baby, with a head like a bowl full of cherries. The chorus repeats again before the song ends, and Byrne encourages us to let good and evil go at it and see what they do.
