Here
David Byrne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here is a region of abundant details
Here is a region that is seldom used
Here is a region that continues living
Even when the other sections are removed

Put your hand out of your pocket
Wipe the sweat off of your brow
Now it feels like a bad connection
No more information now

As it passes through your neurons
Like a whisper in the dark
Raise your eyes to one who loves you
It is safe right where you are

Here is an area of great confusion
Here is a section that's extremely precise
And here is an area that needs attention
Here is a connection with the opposite side

Here is many sounds for your brain to comprehend
Here the sound, it's organized into things that make some sense

Here there is something we call hallucination
Is it the truth or merely a description?

Overall Meaning

David Byrne’s “Here” describes the complexity of the brain and mind, and how it establishes connections and processes information. The song has seven stanzas, and in each one, Byrne presents different ideas about a region of the brain. The title is used as a sort of chorus, firmly rooting the song’s focus in the scientific discussion of physiology rather than venturing into more abstract emotional or philosophical territory.

In the first stanza, Byrne says that the brain has a lot of details, but not all of them are useful – it’s a kind of repository for different bits and pieces of information. The second stanza shifts into the physical world, with the singer wiping sweat off their brow, perhaps illustrating how the brain affects the body. When the singer says “no more information now,” it could be interpreted as a heavy feeling of overload-- the brain is constantly receiving new information and it can be overwhelming at times. Additionally, the metaphor of a bad connection is significant, as it implies that the brain isn’t connecting fully or efficiently.

The later stanzas delve further into these different regions, alternating between describing it in bafflingly abstract scientific language (“an area of great confusion” and “a section that's extremely precise”) to acknowledging the nature of the brain’s operations (“many sounds for your brain to comprehend”). Byrne condenses the complexities of the human brain into a six-minute song, but offers a suggestion for the listener to ground themselves with one who loves them, in the last line.

I've only had the pleasure of seeing a recording of this performance through HBO, and even then...

I was in tears. There's just something so hopeful and painful about it. We're all made of the same stuff, we're wired roughly the same, and for how much we're able to sus out what parts of the brain does what we're still learning more every day. And what's unsaid is despite all that, despite our similarities and our chemistry, we tear each other apart. Yet there's hope. At a fundamental level we're similar, we can make a connection.

I wept in my dark room because I just didn't realize how much I needed to hear something like this said with such earnestness. I'll never forget that moment.

This song opens his most recent shows, yesterday I had the honor of watching his performance at Corona Capital Guadalajara, it was incredible, I loved it but specially this song. His voice live is even more amazing, his presence on stage...the whole concept of his show was a great experience I'll never forget

Raymundo G. Fuentes I very much agree. I went to his show in Detroit at the fox theater. It was amazing. When he first left the state he had a seven minute standing ovation and he came back out and preformed several other songs. I'm still kinda young but I really appreciate his music. The opening act was an artist named Benjamin clementine. He was also amazing. I'm am curious did he open the show you went to? Thanks.

The magnificent opening track on his tour which encapsulates everything I love about the idiosyncratic Mr. Byrne; the otherworldliness, quirkiness and humanity makes him utterly unique.

Everything about this song takes you to a place of indescribable beauty and peace, of how I imagine heaven to feel like. Thank you!

This song makes me feel that even words seem inadequate to describe such depth of profound emotion that it brings forth. All hail to David Byrne who never fails to reminds us of our deep connection to others. We must believe that our finite existence on earth is a rare opportunity to do good, to be kind and be fully here. 💙

This ain't no fooling around

Definitely one of the best concerts I've seen in a long time
