Gadji beri bimba clandridi
Lauli lonni cadori gadjam
A bim beri glassala glandride
E glassala tuffm i zimbra

Bim blassa galassasa zimbrabim
Blassa glallassasa zimbrabim
A bim beri glassala grandrid
E glassala tuffm i zimbra

Gadji beri bimba glandridi
Lauli lonni cadora gadjam

A bim beri glassasa glandrid
E glassala tuffm i zimbra

Overall Meaning

David Byrne's song I Zimbra seems to be more about the rhythmic, multisyllabic play with words than any specific meaning. The lyrics are a mixture of nonsense words and phrases blended with sounds from various languages, creating a pleasing and otherworldly rhythm. The song's first lines, "Gadji beri bimba clandridi/ Lauli lonni cadori gadjam," seem to be an invented dialect. The song's made-up language creates an atmosphere of ecstatic celebration and urgency.

As the song moves along, the lyrics become even more chaotic, culminating in the chorus of "Bim blassa galassasa zimbrabim/ Blassa glallassasa zimbrabim," which seems to be a joyous chant, though the meaning behind it is unknown. The repetition of these sounds creates a trance-like effect, and the listener is encouraged to immerse themselves fully in the rhythm and abandon any logical thought.

Overall, I Zimbra is a fun and joyful song, built on the idea that language can be playful and thrilling. It emphasizes the importance of rhythm and sound as motivators for movement and dance, the importance of letting go of any inhibitions and embracing the primitive forces within.

During the Pandemic I was having a bad patch with depression and in the middle of the night I woke up and looked at my phone and saw an ad for American Utopia in NYC. In the morning I logged on and purchased a ticket for the show knowing it wasn't the best seat in the house but didn't care. A few days later when I got to the theater and was directed up the steps to my seat I froze.... I have vertigo and was not able to walk down the steps to the seat at the top of the balcony. The attendant said to me, "Don't worry this happens all the time.... go down the lower level and I will call down to the attendant there and we have a seat for you." It was a great seat and the show was spectacular.
