Naive Melody
David Byrne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me around
I feel numb, burn with a weak heart
Guess I must be having fun

The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground, head in the sky
It's okay, I know nothing's wrong, nothing

I got plenty of time
You got light in your eyes
And you're standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money, always for love
Cover up and say goodnight, say goodnight

Home, is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home, she lifted up her wings
I guess that this must be the place

I can't tell one from the other
I find you, or you find me?
There was a time before we were born
If someone asks, this is where I'll be, where I'll be

We drift in and out
Sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view

I'm just an animal looking for a home
And share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I'm dead

Eyes that light up
Eyes look through you

Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head

Overall Meaning

David Byrne’s song, “This Must Be the Place,” is a song that explores the idea of home and finding a place where one belongs. The lyrics express a desire to be surrounded by warmth and love, and to have someone to share that space with. The first verse is an expression of the singer’s vulnerability, as they feel numb and have a weak heart, but they also realize that they must be having fun. The next verse suggests an attitude of letting go of the need to define and explain everything, and instead just following the moment and enjoying it as it unfolds.

The chorus repeats the idea of home being where the heart is and finding that place with someone special, while also acknowledging that they have already found it. The bridge and the final verse express a deeper sense of connection and belonging, with the singer asking if they found each other or if they were always meant to come together. They reflect on the beauty of life and love, and the fact that although they will eventually die, they will always have this place and this moment to hold on to.

In summary, “This Must Be the Place” is a song that speaks to the human need to belong and find a place of comfort and love. It also portrays the beauty of life and love, and the power of a moment to make a lasting impact.

This is my favorite heads song. This was mine and my beautiful wife for 40 years song. Every word in this song hits the heart. My wife died last year and the words are so true.

Sorry for your loss. I had a loss much like that, perhaps worse. If she had died, it would have been better. I would have had closure. But the way she chose it, I had neither. At least she died while still loving you.

@jaybrown5922

Im sorry for your loss but glad you have that connection to such a great tune.
