U.B. Jesus
David Byrne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunrise, I'm still dancing Girlfriend, she's my champion
Swing low, pull me over
Hey - be my savior

Blood, Skin
Show me the book
Don't understand the language that they spoke
Don't pity me
Have pity on yourself
You might know Jesus but you'll all join in hell

Shine On Sister!
Don't need a book to put your hand in the fire
Shine On Sister!
Come on in cause it's cold outside

Kiss Me!
Kiss Me!
I can tell your name by the markings on your face

U. B. Jesus
Makin' my way & I'm lovin' my life
Kiss Me!
Kiss Me!
Swing so crazy like the way you ride

Maybe I'm gonna fry in hell
But I feel good when I burn myself
In a smokey place, In my girlfriends car
Threw out the map when we drove to far

Jesus is big
Jesus is strong
Jesus'll kill you if you don't get along

Jesus can swing
Jesus has skills
Go on & try it if you don't believe he will

Jump Back, Jump Back
Givin' me a heart attack
Fall down, Fall down
Sweeter than a cherry bomb

Sweet Thing, Sweet Thing
Steppin' on your violin
Space Boy, Fly Girl
Living in the underworld

Shine On Sister!
Don't need a book to put your hand in the fire
Shine On Sister!
Come on in cause it's cold outside

Jesus is cool
Jesus is scared
Baby you are the only car I drive

Foolin around
Foolin myself
Baby you are the only car I drive

Easy to touch
Easy to find
Baby you are the only car I drive

Melts in my mouth
Melts in the hand
Baby you are the only car I drive

Outta my skin
Outta my life

Baby you are the only car I drive
The only car I drive

Overall Meaning

The song U.B. Jesus by David Byrne is a unique kind of gospel song that has been interpreted in several different ways. The lyrics are an interesting mix of religious themes and romanticized relationships, making the song both intriguing and thought-provoking. At the beginning of the song, the singer details his love for dancing and his relationship with his girlfriend, whom he refers to as his champion. He then asks to be saved by someone, calling out for his savior. The singer talks about blood and skin and asks to see the book but is told that he wouldn't understand the language it's written in.

Later, the song becomes more distorted and the lyrics become more surreal. The singer talks about kissing someone whose name he can tell by the markings on their face. He refers to U.B. Jesus, a modified version of "You'll Be Jesus," which represents his viewpoint on religion. He talks about how good he feels when he burns himself in a smokey place, and calls out for his girlfriend, who is the only car he drives. The song ends with the singer repeating the line, "You are the only car I drive."

Overall, the song is a religious critique that brings forward the morality of Christianity and its teachings. The singer is asking for salvation, but is instead confronted with a type of church that he can't understand. The song suggests that those who follow organized religion might not be the best people to turn to in seeking a path towards salvation.

❤ There are many Gods ❤

The arrangement in this song is brilliant: the modulations, dynamics, pace, hook, etc. In particular, the strings are used so sparingly; yet, perfectly placed and assist in building to the crescendo — perfectly — genius. UB Jesus has a "More Songs About Buildings and Food" but with the growth of David's brilliance on display.

@michaelclark1544

I think this is one of his best solo albums, way overlooked.

@maryjeanbujdos8982

This album is just amazing.

@mettamoose5074

By far my favorite DB album, although his very latest (American Utopia) is pretty dang good!

@ninjaassassin27

It is. Byrne's style is very quirky and original... But that's part of the charm. His singing is not perfectly in tune. The lyrics are clumsy. He exemplifies the human condition with a trippy, highlighted neon perspective.
And if you look at the list of people on this album, he worked HARD to make this thing. Like, there are over 30 musicians that made this thing possible. That's dedication.

@@ninjaassassin27 I never knew he was autistic. What a brilliant musician

@adamwarlock8263

this album is powerful. i try to put it in the hands of all my talking head fan friends. david's work is a profound blend of composition and story telling. thanks for making this available

@QuandaliuskrispingtonXIX

Adam Warlock this album should be a human right

@matthewhorizon6050

The dynamics of this song are unique, ever-changing and beautiful. It builds to an amazing crescendo by taking the listener on a journey of layers of blended textures. Impressive sounding, but equally incredible arrangement. Some of his best work.
