SWEET DREAMS

She broke a home in New Orleans
They made their way to California
Sweet dreams, children, sweet dreams
They hit it off in a Greyhound station
When she kicked the cigarette machine
And woke him up hard from his nap beside it
He talked about his suggar daddies
She talked about her mean Marine
The settled down in seats adjoining
Sharing sweet dreams, sweet dreams
Well there's no man to sell your heart to
When you're dancin' across the TV screens
No husband to beat you when you're in the movies
Just sweet dreams, children, sweet dreams
Run away to another skin
A tough one, a pretty one
That won't let the badness in
Now he's keepin' house for a big producer
Who pays for the classes and the limousines
And she's in a bar, passed out on whiskey
Dreaming sweet dreams, still dreaming sweet dreams
Run away to another skin
A tough one, a pretty one
That won't let the sadness in
Won't let the madness in
There is a sidewalk in California
Where they put the stars right at your feet
And people delight in stepping on them...
The song Sweet Dreams by David Campbell tells the story of two individuals who leave their respective cities to escape their pasts and start afresh in California. The first verse establishes their backgrounds- the man left New York City and the woman broke up a home in New Orleans. They both made their way to California, seeking a better life, and the chorus- "Sweet dreams, children, sweet dreams" - serves as a message of hope to those who wish to take control of their futures.
The second verse describes how the pair first met in a Greyhound station- a chance encounter that would change their lives forever. The woman kicks a cigarette machine, waking the man who was napping beside it, and they begin talking about their pasts. He talks about his "sugar daddies" while she reveals that she was married to a "mean Marine." They soon settled down in adjoining seats, sharing their "sweet dreams."
The third verse reveals that the two have gone on to lead vastly different lives. The man is now a housekeeper for a big producer who supports his dreams, while the woman has turned to alcohol to cope with her demons. The final lines of the song reference the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame on the sidewalk in California and how people enjoy stepping on the stars. It serves as a metaphor for how difficult it is to make it in Hollywood and the toll it can take on a person.
Overall, Sweet Dreams is a poignant song about the struggles and dreams of those who come to California seeking fame, fortune, or just a fresh start.
