Crosby joined the Byrds in 1964. They had their first number-one hit in April 1965 with a cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan. Crosby appeared on the Byrds' first five albums and produced the original lineup's 1973 reunion album. He subsequently formed Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968 with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash.
After the release of their debut album, CSN won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1969. Neil Young joined the group for live appearances, their second concert being Woodstock, before recording their second album Déjà Vu. Meant to be a group that could collaborate freely, Crosby and Nash recorded three gold albums in the 1970s, while the core trio of CSN remained active from 1976 until 2016. CSNY reunions took place in each decade from the 1970s through the 2000s.
Songs Crosby wrote or co-wrote include "Lady Friend", "Everybody's Been Burned", "Why", and "Eight Miles High" with the Byrds and "Guinnevere", "Wooden Ships", "Shadow Captain", and "In My Dreams" with Crosby, Stills & Nash. He wrote "Almost Cut My Hair" and the title track "Déjà Vu" for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 1970 album of the same name. He is known for having employed alternative guitar tunings and jazz influences. He released six solo albums, five of which charted. Additionally, he formed a jazz-influenced trio with his son James Raymond and guitarist Jeff Pevar in CPR. Crosby's work with the Byrds and CSNY has sold over 35 million albums.
Crosby was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once for his work in the Byrds and again for his work with CSN. Five albums to which he contributed are included in Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, three with the Byrds and two with CSN(Y). He was outspoken politically and was sometimes depicted as emblematic of the counterculture of the 1960s.

Drop down mama let your daddy see
You got something down there that keeps on worryin' me
But my mama don't allow me to fool around
"Son you're too young now some woman might put you down"
Go away from my window stop scratchin' 'round my screen
So evil woman and I know what you mean
She's sayin' "Son you're too young now some woman might put you down" Oh
I got three women livin' on the same damn road
One does my, my cookin' my washin' one pays my room and my board
And my mama don't allow me to fool around
"Son you're too young now some woman might put you down"
I say drop down mama let your daddy see
You got something down there that keeps worryin' me
And my mama don't allow me, me to fool, me to fool around
She's sayin' "Son you're too young now some woman "
"Oh, son you're too young some woman"
"Son you're too young some woman might put you down"
The lyrics of David Crosby’s song “Drop Down Mama” are a raw reflection of a boy’s sexual desires, his frustrations, and the societal pressures that prevent him from fully exploring them. The lyrics suggest that the boy is curious and eager to explore his sexual desires, but he is unable to because of the societal norms enforced by his mother. The repeated line “my mama don’t allow me to fool around” hints at his frustration with these norms. The boy is torn between his desire to explore his sexuality and his fear of being rejected or punished, as suggested by the line “son you’re too young now some woman might put you down”.
The chorus of the song, “Drop down mama let your daddy see, you got something down there that keeps on worryin’ me”, suggests that the boy is constantly preoccupied with his sexual desires, which he sees as a source of anxiety. The imagery of the three women living on the same road, one cooking and washing, one paying for his room and board, and the other presumably sexually satisfying him, is a representation of the division of labor and the objectification of women in a patriarchal society. The boy sees these women as interchangeable and doesn’t seem to have any emotional connection with them.
The frustration, the yearning, and the societal pressures portrayed in the lyrics of “Drop Down Mama” are universal themes that resonate with many people. The song is a reflection of the anxiety and complexities of the human experience, and it continues to be a powerful and thought-provoking piece of art.
