O Come O Come Emmanuel
David Crowder Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appears

[Chorus]
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel
O come, thou rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of of hell thy people save
And give them vict'ry o'er the grave

[Chorus]

O come, O Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by thine advent here
And drive away the shaves of night
And pierce the clouds and bring us light

[Chorus]

O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heavenly home
Make safe the way that leads on high
And close the path to misery

[Chorus]

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might
Who to thy tribes, on Sinai's height
In ancient times did'st give the law
In cloud and majesty and awe

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to David Crowder Band's holiday song "O Come O Come Emmanuel" are rich with spiritual significance and convey the longing of the Israelites for the coming of their savior, the Son of God. The first verse speaks of the captivity of the Israelites and their exile, both physical and spiritual. The Israelites mourn in loneliness because they are separated from the presence of God, and they long for His appearance. The use of the word "ransom" suggests that they are held captive, perhaps by sin or by the oppression of others, and they cannot free themselves. Only the Son of God can bring them salvation and freedom.

The second verse personifies Jesus as the rod of Jesse, a reference to Isaiah's prophecy of the Messiah coming from the line of Jesse, the father of King David. His coming will free his people from Satan's tyranny and conquer the grave, symbolizing victory over sin and death through his death and resurrection. The third verse addresses Jesus as the Dayspring or the dawn, who brings light and cheer to a world darkened by sin and despair. He pierces the clouds and brings light, both literally and figuratively. Finally, in the fourth verse, Jesus is addressed as the Key of David, who will open the gates of heaven and make the way safe for his people to enter. Closing the path to misery symbolizes his power to protect his people from the harm that sin and death can cause.

Overall, the song expresses the Israelites' deep longing for the Messiah to come and save them from their captivity and despair. It also highlights the power and majesty of Jesus as the Savior who conquers sin and death and opens the way to eternal life.

What I would not give to see an Ode to Joy Christmas concert (NC)! This has been my favorite Christmas album since it's release (2019, and still hasn't been topped!).

@CateAT @JezzAngel O Come O Come Emmanuel is a hymn that was composed in the middle ages, and itself drew inspiration from a number of 9th+ century 'Vespers' (evening liturgical songs) i believe it was composed by a collection of monks. The musician in this band is indeed the David Crowder Band as you said, @JezzAngel

No one captures the desperate weight of glory like DCB. No one. "Rejoice!" is a commanding victory cry when sung by DCB. MTC, Enya, etc are deaf mutes by comparison. DCB should get back together to do more of this.
