Come Home
David Donatien Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I’m flying far away to be really free
tried hard to build myself independently
it's hard to always do what you expect from me
saying come home
come home

i try to understand why it hurts you
to see the difference in our points of view
don't blame me for a thing that I didn't do
saying come home
come home

it's insane
how feeling so much shame
will only bring you pain
and I no longer know how to explain
see i'm happy as can be
and you're my family, my ground
and i'm just hoping one day i will find you

you're holding back the tears when you kiss me
smile smile when i'm back again as you see me
when years are passing by and you miss me
you're saying come home
come home

such a shame
you're feeling so much blame
and yet i'm still the same
and i no longer know how to explain
see i’m grateful as can be
'cause you’re my family, i'm bound
and i'm just hoping one day you will shine through

let's try to look at each other
find one another
asking how can it be
fighting and loosing each other
thinking the other
is not so much like me
finding out all that we see
is just not always what is real

that you come home
come home
just come home
come home

my turn to understand what you lived through
today i only feel how i miss you
so it's only fare, when it's hard to bare

and you ask if i, i try to come home
come home

Overall Meaning

The song "Come Home" by David Donatien and Yael Naïm is an emotional composition about the complexities of familial relationships. The lyrics are an expression of a person's journey of self-discovery and self-reliance while battling with the expectations of their family. The singer confesses that they had to go far away from their family to find their true self, however, they still miss their loved ones and want to maintain a connection with them. The chorus repeats "Come Home" emphasizing the singer's desire to be accepted and loved by their family, despite their differences. The singer acknowledges the pain caused to their family by their journey and seeks understanding instead of blame.

The first verse "I'm flying far away to be really free, tried hard to build myself independently, it's hard to always do what you expect from me, saying come home, come home" expresses the sense of freedom that comes from physically and emotionally separating from one's family. However, the singer still experiences guilt and pressure from familial expectations to conform, despite their newfound liberation.

The second verse "It's insane how feeling so much shame will only bring you pain, and I no longer know how to explain, see I'm happy as can be and you're my family, my ground, and I'm just hoping one day I will find you" explores the emotional burden and confusion that the singer experiences between being happy on their own and wanting to reconnect with their loved ones. The singer recognizes the pain and confusion that their absence has caused to their family, but struggles to explain their journey and newfound happiness.

Overall, "Come Home" by David Donatien and Yael Naïm is a touching and introspective song dealing with the complexities of familial relationships and the desire for acceptance and understanding.
