Cheer Up
David Ford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ghosts, walk through the walls
They catch your rise and falls
Then sink back to sleeping, again

And dust, it settles on shelves
Will you shake me from myself
And tell me I'm alright?
And all the time on your own
The flowers have grown
Under your feet

And don't, don't you think that it's time
You said, "Hey, this one is mine"
Maybe do what you want to do?

'Cos you, well yo are no fun
And I'm so dumb
But please let us not be lonely, again

And you, you wear your mistakes
And I know mine
But please let us not be lonely, this time

Cheer up, you miserable fuck
This has gone on long enough
And I don't want to hear anymore

'Cos it you wait for the day
You find your thinking bends to straight
You'll be waiting for a long, long time

Oh you, well you are no fun
And I'm so dumb
But please let us not be lonely, again

And you, you wear your mistakes
And I know mine
But please let us not be lonely, this time

Well this house, it creaks in the night
When I turn out all the lights
There's nobody else around

And ghosts, they walk through the walls
They catch your rise and falls
And sink back to sleep, again

Oh you, well you are no fun
And I'm so dumb
But please let us not be lonely, this time

Let us not
(la, la la la la la)

Please
(la la la)

Let us not be lonely
(la la la la)

Oh no
(la la la la)

Oh I'm so dumb
(la, la la la la)

Oh
(la la la)

Please, no, please, let us not be lonely
(la la la la)

(la la la la, la la la, la la la la)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Ford's song Cheer Up explore themes of loneliness, isolation, regret, and desire for companionship. The opening lines of the song paint a stark image of ghosts walking through walls, symbolizing the past that haunts the present. The singer is aware of the ups and downs of life, but feels stuck in a state of sleepwalking. The reference to dust settling on shelves reinforces the idea that life is stagnant and needs upheaval. The singer is seeking validation from the other person, hoping they will shake him from himself and tell him he is alright.

The song goes on to question the notion of time and regret, as the flowers have grown under the person's feet while they were waiting for the right moment to take action. The chorus brings together the title of the song, "Cheer Up", and the biting phrase "you miserable fuck", encapsulating the mixed emotions of frustration and empathy. The line "if you wait for the day you find your thinking bends to straight, you'll be waiting for a long, long time" highlights the need to break free from self-doubt and self-criticism.

The song acknowledges that mistakes have been made by both people, but asks for a chance to move forward and not be lonely. The haunting image of the creaking house in the night emphasizes the loneliness and isolation felt by the singer. Overall, the song is a heartfelt plea for connection and validation.

This is the first time I've heard your music & apparently I've been missing out on something very, very perfectly timed and refreshing....
Thank you, David :) .....I chose this song for my best friend, also a David, whom is beautiful too but couldn't find the words to express a freight train of heartbreak.
God Bless your existence.
I can't even stand the internet much but then there's you.
Thank goodness for that.
<3! Cheers from these miserable fucks in Pennsylvania! ;) xo

this song just blew my mind all over again, it's almost like every time you hear his songs it feels like the first time b/c theirs so much passion and emotion behind it, his voice the lyrics, the looping, it's all great, I'm officially jealous of this dude b/c he's on to something. Only other guy i've seen do similar is Joseph Arthur.

We were standing to his right, just spellbound with tingling skin and open hearts. the family with the boy with the long blond hair, the cute blond girl and the astounded blond mom who was grinning with delight. yes we love him, he is adorable and has talent in every cell in his body. " you can't get tea here without lemon", he said so quietly and softly... we left with David in our hearts and listen to him at home and everywhere..
