Echoes
David Gilmour Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overhead the albatross
Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance, two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can?

And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
No one speaks and no one tries
No one flies around the sun

Cloudless everyday
You fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes

So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to David Gilmour's "Echoes" are a poetic representation of the vastness and mysteries of the universe. The opening lines describe an albatross, which is a metaphor for freedom and the ability to soar through the air without boundaries. The image of the albatross hanging motionless upon the air creates a sense of weightlessness and stillness, which sets the tone for the rest of the song.

The lyricist then goes deeper, describing the unknown depths of the ocean and the echoes of a distant time. This could be interpreted as a reference to the origins of life on Earth or a metaphor for the cosmic past that we are all connected to. The idea of everything being green and submarine creates an otherworldly image of a place that is familiar yet unknown.

The next verse explores the idea of connection and how strangers passing in the street can have an impact on each other's lives. The lyricist poses the question of whether they should take the other person's hand and lead them through the land to help them understand the world around them. This can be seen as a call for empathy and connection that is desperately needed in a world that is divided and disconnected.

The final verse describes the beauty of everyday life and the ability to connect with something greater than ourselves. The lyricist describes the sun streaming through the window, inciting them to rise and embrace the world with open arms. The final line, "And call to you across the sky," is a powerful message of hope and connection that encapsulates the themes of the entire song.

I am 75 years old and I've been listening to PF for about 53 years. Listening to this cut takes me back to a more innocent time in my life. I was about 22/23 years old, long, dark hair, no wrinkles, smoking a little weed, my whole life ahead of me. I am now a grandfather with 4 grandkids. Life has flown by and I am a lot more introspective now. I still love PF but I look at my reflection in my iPad and the long dark hair is now short and silver, the wrinkles are many and I quit smoking weed years ago. I am very healthy but the end of my road ahead is in sight. I can close my eyes and remember the good times and there were many. I want you all to know that life is a gift. Don't squander it. Many don't make it to the place I am now in life. I thank God for what He has given me. Be good to people, marry a good person, love your kids and grandkids unconditionally. You get one chance at life. Don't blow it. Deep down, most of you are good people. Peace out, Tom P.S. YouTube "Rumpus Band" then go down to the 5th song. You'll be blown away. It's a kid band playing Comfortably Numb. I just discovered them.

21:07 It hits different when you realise that Gilmour and Wright knew they were playing this song for the last time! It is about two great friends that have been on the road for more than 40 years saying goodbye to eachother trough the most beautifull music ever done! Always bring tears to my eyes! Just amazing!

Yes, and Wow what a performance by both, keep in mind that they were both in their 70's at that point. Blows me away every time I watch it.

@hugoparra120

Even more, there's a beautiful sight between them at the end... They sigh each other and a tiny smile ...
This is the definitiin of "harmony"

@christopherdrzik6784

It was actually 2 years. The concert was recorded in 2006 the album was released in 2008, like two months after Rick died. I think? I know David said he would never play it again. I agree it's a masterpiece and the two were talking to each other. Maybe their souls knew the future. I would have to Google more information. The cd and DVD are great. Keep the faith and stay safe my friend.
