Murder
David Gilmour Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some of them standing, some were waiting in the line
As if there was something that they thought they might find
Taking some strength from the feelings that always were shared
And in the background, the eyes that just stared

What was it brought you out here in the dark?
Was it your only way of making your mark
Did you get rid of all the voices in your head?
Do you now miss them and the things that they said?

On your own admission you raised up the knife
And you brought it down ending another man's life
When it was done you just threw down the blade
While the red blood spread wider like the anger you made

I don't want this anger that's burning in me
It's something from which it's so hard to be free

But none of the tears that we cry in sorrow or rage
Can make any difference, or turn back the page

Overall Meaning

The song "Murder" by David Gilmour talks about a man who committed a murder and the events that led up to it. The first verse describes a group of people, some standing in line and waiting for something, and others just staring in the background. This scene sets the stage for the main character who must have been searching for something or someone to satisfy his desires.

The second verse poses the question of why the main character committed the murder, was it to make a mark, or to silence the voices in his head? The use of rhetorical questions in this verse is effective in making the listener think about the motivation behind the murder. The third verse reveals that the main character did indeed commit the murder, raising a knife and ending another man's life. The imagery of the red blood spreading wider as the anger inside the main character grows is potent.

The final verse talks about the difficulty of dealing with anger and how it can impact a person's life. The lyrics suggest that even though the murder cannot be undone, the expression of tears cannot take away the pain.

Overall, the lyrics of "Murder" delve into the darker side of human experiences and emotions. The song forces the listener to grapple with deep questions surrounding the morality of murder and the way anger can control a person's actions.

Fretless bass lines by the enormous Pino Palladino are sublime. Never had David such a great bass player, Waters included.

@CJFerg81

I'm sure Guy Pratt would knock it out of the park if he was given the chance to play this live with DG.

@samuelluria4744

Marcelo Soto-Quiroga - Lol, Waters plays bass about as well as I play the motherfucking spoons.

@timc2219

waters was a mediocre player at best... wrote some really good stuff, gotta give him that... sadly not a fan, he did to floyd what yoko did to the beatles... then again, after DSOTM, was there anywhere to go? David Gilmour and Polly Samson took them in a good direction, and best of all they all looked happy to play together, with waters, the tension appeared to make it more of a job than a joy...

@elausente21

@@CJFerg81 no doubt, Pino is amazing, but Guy is extremely versatile

@jameshosford4627

@@timc2219 Can we please get over this nonsense, racist, misogynist notion that Yoko broke up The Beatles?

Also where else did they have to go? Maybe three more of the greatest albums of all time?

Brilliant song! Easily one of my favorite Gilmour pieces. RIP John Lennon.

@powertuber3.047

The quintessential Gilmour vocal.

@nightmission

I remember buying this album when it first released.. I was 14 years old and when that needle dropped and I heard this song , I became a life long fan of the artist that David is as a individual. and not just a part of Pink Floyd... He is one of those guitarist that leaves you with the impression , that his heart and soul are speaking through his guitar...

Nicely put 🙏
