Heart and Soul
David Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For something in nothing
A voice in the air
A face in the doorway
In wordless prayer
I’m heart and soul boys
Heart and soul
Wonder shining in my eyes
Like I’m three years old

Not dead only sleeping
Adrift on the sea
The start of the river
The end of me
I’m heart and soul boys
Heart and soul
Glory shining in my eyes
Like I’m three years old
Shining in my eyes
Like I’m three years old

Where truth ain’t resented
Where love ain’t despised
And misrepresented
And sanitised
I’m heart and soul boys
Heart and soul
Wonder shining in my eyes
Like I’m three years old
Shining in my eyes
Like I’m three years old
Shining in my eyes
Like I’m three years old

And if I died tonight
To ask for more would be obscene
Surely we earned the right
To drink it pure
Break it clean

That curls in the bracken
That swirls in the dust
And cries to awaken
This wanderlust
I’m heart and soul boys
Heart and soul
Glory shining in my eyes
Like I’m three years old
Shining in my eyes
Like I’m three years old

Shining in my eyes
Like I’m three years old

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Gray's song "Heart and Soul" convey a sense of longing for a pure and authentic experience in life. The first verse speaks of finding something significant in seemingly mundane or insignificant moments. It suggests that there is meaning to be found even in the smallest details of life. The mention of "wordless prayer" implies a deep connection to something beyond words, perhaps a spiritual or transcendent experience.

The chorus, "I'm heart and soul boys, heart and soul," emphasizes the singer's wholehearted and passionate approach to life. It suggests that they fully invest themselves in their experiences and relationships. The line "Wonder shining in my eyes like I'm three years old" symbolizes the sense of awe and innocence that can be lost as one grows older. It reflects a desire to recapture that childlike wonder and enthusiasm.

The second verse introduces a contrast between being "not dead only sleeping" and being adrift on the sea. It expresses a feeling of being detached or lost, possibly in a metaphorical sense. The river mentioned could represent the flow of life, and the end of the river representing the singer's own mortality. This line can be interpreted as a reflection on the fragility and fleeting nature of human existence.

The third verse tackles themes of truth, love, and how they are often misunderstood or misrepresented in society. The singer longs for a world where truth is not resented and love is not despised or sanitized. This suggests a desire for authenticity and genuine connections, free from societal constraints and expectations. The line "heart and soul boys, heart and soul" is repeated in this verse, reinforcing the singer's commitment to living with passion and intensity.

The final stanza contemplates the idea of mortality and the pursuit of a meaningful life. It suggests that if the singer were to die tonight, asking for more would be seen as excessive. They acknowledge the need to embrace life fully in its purest form. The imagery of nature, with bracken and dust, invokes a sense of the organic and raw. The final line, "This wanderlust," expresses a longing for exploration and discovery, implying that the search for meaning and purpose is an ongoing journey.

Overall, "Heart and Soul" is a song that delves into the yearning for authenticity, wonder, and significance in life. It explores themes of spirituality, mortality, and the desire for genuine connections. The lyrics encourage listeners to embrace life passionately and approach it with childlike curiosity and awe.

Hello TheCottonDrake 9,

I was looking at your YouTube channel and I just see two things there. I'm guessing you might be about 16 years old something like that. I will be 68 next July. What you have written confuses me. Are you criticising me in some way? I ask you to say whatever it is that you want to say directly to me.
David Gray is greatly loved here in Ireland and we here in Ireland launched his international career. We love him so much like I do too. His album White Ladder is the best selling album in Ireland ever and I have it too, of course, along with another of his albums.
The song Skellig on this new album is about a very holy place a little island off the coast of Ireland where monks used to live many centuries ago.

All the best,

Peter Nolan. Ph.D.(physics). Dublin. Ireland.

Ps What is a Cotton Drake 9?

First Time hearing about you Mr. David Gray, I would like to say... I love your gentle melody, on your guitar right after every verse. Very nicely done, with a unique distinctive touch. So simple, but yet so fueling and energetic, like food for the Soul, all of our Tears seem to just flow, now I hope that'll be our heart and souls.... Because my words, are simply attached to my Soul.
May they never fold..
So that all of our humbleness,
Shall always grow,
For my Numbness, is always Dumbness...
May these Words, always Glow...
Lost within a Heavenly Toss,
I never thought I'll end up being some Doss, laying up upon some Wet Moss....
I try to seek, and search for a door, as my words shall have an everlasting lumistic glow,
Here at your Lighthouse,
In a simple imaginary show...

For this Song Keeps shining in my eyes like I am 3 years old...

And my 2 Year Old Son, looks up to me ask....
"Dada, why do you have Stars Shining in your Eyes?
Because Dada Son, when you grow old, and be a man of your own. Your own eyes will water seeds, that yearns for your need."

This is that song to play when you need to let the weight of the day just slide off of your shoulders. Breathe. 💙

@JasonFarrTubes

David Gray's artistry hasn't slowed or diminished in 25 years and that's an amazing thing. Rarely do you hear new music from artists 25 years into their career that is this inspired. Beautiful song.

@rachelmalcolm2611

Yes! I wholeheartedly agree with you.
