Lately
David Gray Lyrics

That the sky would lift
That I'd find my place
That I'd see your face in the door
And the sun would glint
An a time well spent
An a time that ain't no more

Taste the broken hearts
In the vacant lots
See the fruit that rots on the trees
Try to turn my head
Leave it all for dead
But it's in my mind always

Honey lately I've been way down
A load on my mind
Honey lately I've been way down
Load on my mind

Someone tell me where did it go
Darling I'm damned if I know
I seen that look in your eye
No-one ever gave it a chance
I could have said in advance
You saw it all at a glance
And goodbye

Drag a salted kiss
From this cup of bliss
Watch a new lie twist on the breeze

You can paint it red
Leave it all for dead
But it's in my head always

Honey lately I've been way down
A load on my mind
Honey lately I've been way down
Load on my mind

Someone tell me where did it go
Darling I'm damned if I know
I seen that look in your eye
No-one ever gave it a chance
I could have said in advance
You saw it all at a glance
And goodbye

Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye

Honey lately I've been way down
Honey lately I've been way down
Honey lately I've been way down
Honey lately I've been way down

Honey lately I've been way down (x4)

That the sky would lift
That I'd find my place
Dream another face
That I'd find my place
That my mind would shift
Like a new snow drift
Then I'd find my place
Gotta find my place

Honey lately I've been way down (x4)

Lately
Lately
Lately
Lately

Been walkin' down dead ends
Disappearing down dead ends
Stranger to my friends
Been lost inside dead ends

Through the smoke rings of my mind
Through the rocky ruins of time
Down past the haunted trees
Out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow

Seen it through a painted glass
Watchin' the whole stinkin' thing slide past

Lately
Honey lately I've been way down (x4

Lately (repeat)

OMG my beating heart and this song! It's EXACTLY what I'm going thru. To the smallest letter. Thank god for artist's like David Gray. A songwriter with a poets heart and a fearless tongue.

"Lately" by English singer, songwriter David Gray from "Live in Slow Motion", 2006 - with a nice nod to Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" to boot. https://youtu.be/RHNC_9jNnG0
These are the lyrics as they originally appeared on the album version of the song:
That the sky would lift
That I'd find my place
That I'd see your face in the door
And the sun would glint
And a time well spent
And a time that ain't no more
Taste the broken hearts
In the vacant lots
See the fruit that rots on the trees
Try to turn my head
Leave it all for dead
But it's in my mind always
Honey lately I've been way down
A load on my mind
Honey lately I've been way down
Load on my mind
Someone tell me where did it go
Darling I'm damned if I know
I seen that look in your eye
No-one ever gave it a chance
I could have said in advance
You saw it all at a glance
And goodbye
Drag a salted kiss
From this cup of bliss
Watch a new lie twist on the breeze

Do you ever get so caught up in wanting and needing something so bad, you have this fire that feels like it's eating a hole deep inside of you?

Morning or night, it doesn't leave you be, ever. Somedays are clearly better than others, but there are those days when you can't think of nothing else. And even sometimes, the fire burns so damn hot, it's hard to breathe...yeah.

The uphill climb to chasing a dream, and I know at some point soon, I'm going to have to let it all go and trust it in the hands of fate.

And that, my friends, is where the fear lies.
In the unknowing. In the place where control isn't allowed.

But for now, I will try to just catch my breath. And Breathe.

This is just amazing. It's hard to listen and not be moved, no matter how many times I put it on repeat. It freezes me, simply brilliant.

Not Telling

Agree, too. Angels are onstage in this version.

You and me both....
Amazing

I so much agree

I love how he just adds additional lyrics, seemingly off the top of the head, in this version... "That my mind would shift, like a new snow drift." "Been walking down dead ends. A stranger to my friends." "Seen it through a pane of glass. Watching the whole stinking thing slide past."

Jonathan Holleb

@Greg Howard You aren't wrong. A few of the lines are from Dylan. But, he also adds more of his own.

Jonathan Holleb

@Greg Howard Yeah, but those added lyrics here aren't in Mr. Tambourine Man. Sometimes he adds the whole "Smoke rings of my mind. Foggy ruins of time" part to this song though.

Greg Howard

So something crazy about that...the lyrics Gray rattles off is actually from Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man! Let me know if I just blew your mind...because it did me when I realized it:)
