David Grisman started his musical career in 1963 as a member of The Even Dozen Jug Band. His nickname, "Dawg" was affectionately assigned by his close friend Jerry Garcia (the two met at a Van Hoy Campground (NC) back when they used to host the old time fiddlers convention). "Dawg Music" is what he calls his mixture of bluegrass and Django Reinhardt-Stéphane Grappelli-influenced jazz, as highlighted on his 1977 album "Hot Dawg". Stephane Grappelli played on a couple of tracks on the Hot Dawg album and then the 1981 recording "Stephane Grappelli and David Grisman Live". It was his early fusions with Reinhardt-era Jazz that led to the formation of the genre known as newgrass. Grisman, along with New Grass Revival are generally considered the modern day Bill Monroes to this new bluegrass-influenced sound.
Denny Zeitlin, Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor, Béla Fleck, Bob Brozman, Mike Auldridge, Mike Seeger, David Bromberg, Martin Taylor, Del McCoury, Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs, John Hartford, Darol Anger (Turtle Island String Quartet), Sam Bush, and the Kronos Quartet are just some of the musicians that have played with David Grisman or been part of the DGQ (David Grisman Quintet).
The documentary "Grateful Dawg" chronicles the deep friendship between Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. David Grisman appeared on the Grateful Dead's American Beauty album. To this day, Grisman complains of how Jerry Garcia vetoed the length of the mandolin solo featured on the studio version of Ripple. The two recorded a number of duet albums, including the children's album "Not for Kids Only". They also played together as the band "Old and in the Way" with Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, and John Kahn, which recorded three different albums.

Seen nobody like you
Well, oh never, have I ever
Seen nobody like you
Well, you call me up and say you'll meet me at nine
I have to hurry, hurry but I'm there on time
I walk right up and knock on your door
Ain't never, oh darlin'
Seen nobody like you
Well, but I love you
Yes, I love you
I love you just the same
I ain't never, I ain't never
Seen nobody like you
Oh never, have I ever
Seen nobody like you
Well, you told me sweet things that you don't mean
You got me livin' in a walking dream
All the things that you don't do
My friends say, "Man, what's wrong with you?"
I ain't never, oh darlin'
Seen nobody like you
Oh, but I love you
Yes, I love you
Well, I love you just the same
Well, you told me sweet things that you don't mean
You got me livin' in a walking dream
All the things that you don't do
My friends say, "Man, what's wrong with you?"
I ain't never, oh darlin'
Seen nobody like you
Oh, but I love you
Well, I love you
Well, I love you just the same
The lyrics of David Grisman/Jerry Garcia's song I Ain't Never describe the love-hate relationship of the singer with his lover. The singer admits that he has never met anyone like his beloved before because of the way she treats him. He narrates that he always rushes to meet her on time when she requests him to meet, but once he arrives, he learns that she's not there anymore. The way she treats him is never seen before, and he still loves her nevertheless.
The chorus of 'Ain't never' repeats thrice in the song, emphasizing the singer's amazement that he has never met someone like his beloved. The second verse emphasizes the difference between the sweet things she says and the things she actually does. His friends ask him what's wrong with him to be with someone who doesn't treat him well, but he still loves her just the same. The repetition shows how his love for her is not dependent on her actions but on his feelings.
In conclusion, the lyrics of I Ain't Never describe a complex relationship between the singer and his beloved. The singer loves someone who treats him poorly, and he is amazed that no one else is like her, emphasizing the unique nature of their relationship. The song encapsulates the complexities and contradictions of love.
