You
David Grisman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It had to be you, it had to be you.
I wandered around and finally found the somebody who
Could make me be true, could make me feel blue,
And even be glad just to be sad thinkin' of you.

Some others I've seen might never be mean
Might never be cross or try to be boss,
But they wouldn't do.
For nobody else gave me a thrill.
With all your faults, I love you still,
It had to be you, wonderful you,
It had to be you.

It had to be you, it had to be you.
I wandered around and finally found somebody who
Could make me be true, could make me be blue,
And even be glad just to be sad thinkin' of you.

Some others I've seen might never be mean
Might never be cross or try to be boss,
But they wouldn't do.

For nobody else gave me a thrill.
With all your faults, I love you still.

It had to be you, wonderful you

It had to be you.

Overall Meaning

In David Grisman's song "You," the singer is expressing their love and devotion towards a particular person. The song begins with the singer acknowledging that this person was the only one that could make them feel true emotions, even if it meant feeling sad sometimes. The singer then goes on to describe other people they have met who may have been kinder or less challenging, but ultimately would not suffice. The singer recognizes that despite the faults of their love interest, they still love them unconditionally. The chorus repeats that it had to be this person, that they are wonderful and the only one for the singer.

The lyrics of this song demonstrate the idea of fate, that this person was meant to be with the singer. The repetition of "it had to be you" emphasizes that there was no other option or person that could make the singer feel the way they do. The line "even be glad just to be sad thinkin' of you" is a unique way of describing the effect this person has on the singer. It highlights the bittersweet nature of their love, that even when they are sad, the thought of this person can make them feel some kind of happiness.

Overall, "You" is a love song that showcases the intensity and depth of feelings that can be experienced when in love. The lyrics and melody work together to create a nostalgic and romantic atmosphere.

I was at the RFK GD/Dylan/Tom Petty show, it was so hot outside. I was chilling in the stadium seating behind the stage. I saw Bobby talking to Dylan, one of them fired up a joint, they both shared it, and talked for about 20 minutes. I'll never forget seeing Bob Dylan in leather pants, thinking "why?" it being so dreadfully hot!

Then this really young, blonde, smoking hottie comes up and starts hanging on Bobby, kissing all over him.

Same woman, his wife, I saw in documentary The Other One. She looked like she was about 16 then.

When I looked to the left, right if facing stage, I saw a small office trailer. Through the little window I could see Jerry warming up on an acoustic. Jerry finally emerged from the trailer and walked backstage, then the band went on.

Dylan have departed by the time Jerry arrived backstage.

Never forget Bobby's cute gf! When I watched The Other One I was, like, "that was her!" Bobby's daughters were about the same age in the film as Mrs Weir was at the RFK show. Bobby has 3 daughters? look like clones of his wife.

She, and Bobby, commented in the film she meet Bobby before she was 18, but they waited until she was 18 before they started dating. Sure looked like they were dating at the RFK show! She was, like, a little monkey hanging all over him!

I bought 4th row seats to see Hunter open for Jerry and John( all acoustic) at Constitution Hall in D.C.,'86, 4 days after they went on sale- no line, just walked up and bought 'em- like JGB there in '84 . Same for Kokomo, Go Ahead and Bobby and the Midnites (all at the Bayou, formerly a small club in DC.)
Oh, the days before Touch of Gray...
From then on it was mail order only for me.
The only good that came out of it besides getting NYE shows tix hand delivered to VA, was the resurgence of the Warlocks...Blessed to have seen the rise and fall of Brent.
Only went to JGB shows after that....
Didn't get to see Grisman til Old and In the Gray (same line up as In the Way, 'cept w/o Dear Jerry.)
Speaking of which flew from TX to DEAR JERRY show 5/15 Columbia, MD..
That's the last I've seen of
Phil,Bob,Bill & Mickey...
