Now We Remain
David Haas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We hold the death of the Lord deep in our hearts.
Living, now we remain with Jesus, the Christ.

1. Once we were people afraid, lost in the night.
Then by your cross we were saved.
Dead became living, life from your giving.

2. Something which we have known,
something we've touched, what we have seen with our eyes:
this we have heard, life giving Word.

3. He chose to give of himself, became our bread.
Broken that we might live. Love beyond love, pain for our pain.

4. We are in the presence of God. This is our call.
Now to become bread and wine: food for the hungry,

life for the weary,
for to live with the Lord, we must die with the Lord.

Overall Meaning

David Haas's song "Now We Remain" discusses the powerful concept of holding the death of the Lord in our hearts while living and remaining with Jesus, the Christ. The lyrics are divided into four separate stanzas, each offering a unique perspective on this theme.

In the first stanza, the lyrics describe how the cross of Christ has saved us, transforming us from fearful and lost people into those who are alive and living through His giving of life. The second stanza speaks to the tangible nature of our faith, emphasizing how we have not only heard of the life-giving message of Jesus but have also seen and touched it with our own eyes.

The third stanza explores the idea that Christ has given of Himself to us, becoming our bread and offering His life to give us life. This act of love is described as being beyond mere love and has given us a sense of pain that mirrors the pain Christ felt in giving us life. Finally, the fourth stanza speaks to the present and future nature of our faith, highlighting that we are now in God's presence and called to offer ourselves as bread and wine for the hungry and weary, dying with Christ so that we can live with Him.

Overall, "Now We Remain" presents a poignant and powerful message about the nature of faith and Christ's love that echoes throughout the ages.

With "You Are Mine," this is one of David Haas' best and most beautiful songs. "Now We Remain" stays as my favorite Lenten hymn. May this song always remind us of the greatest and unparalleled LOVE who became the sacrificial Lamb in order to save us from certain death ... JESUS the CHRIST!
