Sacrifice
David Julyan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No I don't need a reason to be breathin'
Just here doin' what I can
No I don't want a family who would damn me
And resent everything I am
I don't need to prove to all the ones who
Feel that I need to fit in
No I won't ever tell you that I failed you
I'd rather start life over again

No I'm sorry to say
There'll be no sacrifice today

No I can see it clearly
Why you feel me
Why you got to bring me down
No I don't want to fight you
Just to spite you
But I'm not afraid to take you out

No I'm sorry to say
There'll be no sacrifice today

Everybody expects me to break
But I'll never break down again
Everybody expects me to give up
But you'll never see me givin' in
Everybody wants me to lose
But I'll never lose who I am

No I'm sorry to say
There'll be no sacrifice today [Repeat x2]

Everybody expects me to break
But I'll never break down again
Everybody expects me to give up
But you'll never see me givin' in
Everybody wants me to lose
But I'll never lose who I am

No I'm sorry to say
There'll be no sacrifice today [Repeat x2]

No sacrifice today [Repeat x2]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to David Julyan's song Sacrifice are about confidence and determination in oneself. The singer explains that they do not need a reason to exist and are just living their life to the best of their ability, without needing to fit in with others' expectations. The singer also mentions that they have no interest in starting a family that would judge and resent them for who they are. They refuse to apologize for any perceived failures and are willing to start over again if necessary. The chorus repeats that there will be no sacrifice made today, meaning that the singer will not compromise their identity or goals for anyone else's benefit.

The second verse addresses someone who is attempting to "bring [the singer] down" but the singer asserts that they will not fight to spite them unless necessary. They will defend themselves if need be but will not go out of their way to engage in conflict. Throughout the song, the singer acknowledges that many people expect them to fail, break down, and give up, but they are determined to maintain their sense of self and not sacrifice their beliefs or values for anyone else's approval.

Overall, the song is an empowering message of self-confidence and resilience in the face of adversity. It encourages listeners to stay true to themselves and not let other people's expectations dictate their lives.

For anyone who loves the setting and feel of this movie, there's a great book by Dan Simmons called "Drood" about the rivalry between Charles Dickens and one of his contemporaries. It has some supernatural elements to it as well. Reading it to this soundtrack, especially this track, is a great experience.

Tesla: 'They say man's reach exceeds his grasp. That is a lie, man's grasp exceeds his nerve' Great scene and great music to make it all the more captivating.

@Why hello there Yeah, not for me. Wasn't a good performance.

Why hello there

It's even better when you realize Tesla was played by David Bowie.

The beautiful thing about Nolan's films is they are all masterpiece, and anyone have a different favorite movie. My favorite is The Dark Knight, but i fucking love all movies...i think Following is incredibile and amazing too.(Sorry for my bad english, i'm italian)

I hope someday Nolan call back David Julyan to work together again, (The Work of Hans Zimmer in Nolan movies is mind blowing) but I kinda miss this minimalistic style of his first movies.

@Self Healing God Nope! That's why this is underrated and doesn't get concerts, exposure and discussions as much as his other films and scores.
