He "stumbled" onto a different path in the early 80s. Now working as a seminal new age artist, though he prefers the label "contemporary instrumental", his piano-driven music has attracted a wide variety of fans, with multiple albums under his belt. He is perhaps best known for 'Cristofori's Dream', certified gold by the RIAA in 1993.

We call this Kelsey's song. Our daughter died as a baby and we played this at her memorial service in 1992. I couldn't hear it without crying for years. Now, I can listen and it brings good feelings. I picture myself dancing with her at all the different stages of her life. She would be twenty-eight now. We last danced at her wedding (in my Imagination) such a Timeless classic

I first listened to this song as a little girl when my mother played it out of her old music collection, and fell in love. In my mind, I saw myself in a wedding gown, dancing with the man of my dreams. I felt light and beautiful, almost like a dream. I was devastated when, not a week later, her CD collection was ruined and I could no longer listen to it. Years and years later, I heard it in a whisper of a dream as I awoke one morning and couldn't for the life of me remember the title or composer of the track, only that dreamlike beauty of it. I searched and searched and searched, and eventually gave up on the idea of finding out who wrote the song in my dreams.

Now, nearly a decade thereafter, I happen across Christophori's Dream and find myself swept along once again in that wedding fantasy, in the dream I once had as a child.

Thank you, YouTube, for returning to me what I thought time had stolen. Thank you.

Same memory for me, except that I had a note memory "disability" at the time, but I could call it all from the depths. I first heard this song with my (God bless him) Father during work at his lab. . . things got uglier than you can imagine and here we are, BUT I remembered this song from a single chord. I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments on this song. For me, the song is the journey of someone's life. Starts off simple, then ramps up throughout middle during our busy and productive adult years, then at the end, it calms and slowly comes to an end. The very end reminds me of an old man sitting a the park recalling his long, fulfilled life. Life is now simple again.

Start out clumsy, picking out individual notes, then starting to get a feeling for the flow, then proficiency, and adding depth, and collaboration, then mastery of the full range. Then back to the level of a master doing something simple, but perfectly.

Over 30 yrs ago I was driving down a dark road late at night & your dad’s Whiter Shade of Pale came on the radio. Tears of joy ran down my face as he hit a high note that found a place in my heart never touched before. It was like I discovered a missing piece of the puzzle I didn’t know I needed. It literally changed my life in so many ways & it has never been the same!

The next day I bought his cassette. Then I heard Christofi’s Dream & fell under it’s spell. I heard he was coming to perform in St Louis; I went by myself & savored every second. It was a magical experience I’ll never forget! And I loved the story of Christofi’s Dream.

Your dad’s music changed my life by opening the door & my heart to the World of Instrumental, New Age music. l believe this music changed my DNA by changing my energy frequency & has shown me how to go within myself to know inner peace. My sister has been "the" music department in a small school here in Oregon. She is retiring this year after 23 years of teaching. She had her final concert last week and towards the end, she played this song on the piano as a solo. Then she walked over to me and gave me a hug and said "that one was for momma" (we lost mom 3 years ago). Needless to say, I got very choked up at that point. This song never fails to make me cry. The melody is so haunting, yet beautiful, and takes me to a magical place of reminiscence and longing for the past to be a reality again. I remember trying to play this piece when I was super young, using one finger to punch in the keys. To this day, it is still my favorite piano piece. Frail Bird. I discovered this particular piece back in early 2010. I was looking for something that provided comfort. Provided some relief. At that time in my life, my mom was passing from cancer and I was also involved in a bitter divorce. To try to find peace, I found you, David Lanz and this video. I will forever cherish for it comforted me when I was alone with no one to turn to. Today, I find myself having issues with my heart. They are such completely different songs, this is so much more. wow this song blows my mind litterly away, touches my soul to the point, love begins to flow out like a waterfall, like living waters, like ive heard it before, almost as if I recognize it from a past life, or a premortal life, and this peirces the veil, peirces the heart, it shatters and rebuilds and throws your heart thru the Heavens and you experience the Dow, the Ying and Yang, the misery and happiness of the universe, and suddenly it all makes sence. like the very essence of this song touches the soul and it erupts so many emotions and it almost has a cathartic like effect from the very first few notes you listen to. it's like revisiting your childhood, and your life, and being okay with it, where you once regretted some of it, this song mends and touches the heart. it's really mind blowingly perfectly perfect.

I have always loved this piece. My husband and I had a home on Cape Cod, and when we opened for company during the summer, we would put up the American Flag outside our porch and then put Christofiorii's Dream on the stereo so the season was open and we ready for guests. We were always ready for company, family and friends, but for us the flag had to be out and this music to our ears for it to be official for the summer season.

When I first heard this pieces I became a loyal fan of David Lanz! I was doing research to find just the right composition for one of my piano students to play in a recital...then I ran across this on utube. The first time I heard this I was floored. I could not believe I was listening to such beautiful music. That was back in 1998; the Internet was still young, and I had just bought the CD from a fellow on eBay... I was still hanging out in the chat rooms on local bulletin boards, and someone had recommended this. Wow! When I was little I used to sit and watch my dad play piano all the time for hours. He used to play beautiful music just like this and was perfect. He would make his own songs and just go along and add more to it. He recently gotten Alzheimer's and now he can't play the piano anymore.No one ever got him playing piano on video or recording. David, I have loved this CD from the first time I heard it in '88. It is still my #1 CD. The first time I heard it I was alone driving down a country road in the fall. The sky was blue with big white billowy clouds and the fall leaves were floating down in time to the music. It was so beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing your gift! One of the most beautiful and yes, haunting songs I have ever heard. My wife and I were lying down on the bed late at night shortly after we were married when this song came on. We were transfixed and though it was late, we called the station and the DJ actually answered and told us what it was. Two of my piano playing kids have both played this song at recitals. Picture this: 1987, Pacific Coast Highway crashing waves on your left, the car-top is down, the beautiful California Coast sunshine and warm wind in your face as you're approaching SLO with those beautiful mountains on your right rumbling into the Pacific Ocean ...and you've David Lanz's Cristofori's Dream severely cranked db's on the CD player with incredible acoustics and absolutely no distortion.

I was in David Lanz concert in Boston around 1994 while studying at MIT. I was living at 504 Beacon st, the first apt after the bridge from MIT. During one of cold and dark winter night, i opened my window facing my campus course 1 building and play this tune. Thanks David for the memory

i was cold. I'd nothing to do. I sat at the computer desk wondering what else was to be found. I recalled my friend playing five of the nine-page song by heart. I remembered the name. Usually there were bad things on YouTube but i took the chance and wrote in the name. I clicked on the first thing and just sat, my dangling feet warmthened and back full of loving chills. I listened and felt warm on that cold day. lol, i write poetry :3

This is the perfect song for Autumn. As I hear this, I see a quiet stream with willows at the water's edge. The leaves fall from the trees into the water and all is quiet. A deer approaches the stream and drinks from it and all as peaceful as night falls... the cold approaches and the deer runs off as the moon rises over the water.

I was heavy into Narada and Windham Hill label music in the mid to late 80s. This song was on several albums and has strong nostalgia for me as my wife and I would convert the original record albums to cassettes and play these on our annual road trips through the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.

I love this piano piece. It is an amazing simple and pure waltz that makes me want to dance. I feel floated and lifted away to a beautiful place when I listen to it. A place of love and happiness. Perhaps heaven. Or dancing with the man I love.

A girl wanders alone, running through a flowerung field, and soon finds herself in a dark forest. She dances with the trees and hums a melody. She is alone until a handsome man steps out into the light. They dance. Lightly stepping over crisp leaves, they dance to the melody they both know. Perfectly in sync. They are equals, and match together like no other. They waltz through the trees, her midnight dress flourishing like a spring flower. Swirling leaves and captivating snow gather around. Its cold. Colder than before. She can start to see her breath. It doesnt matter. She is with him. The cold cant stop her dark locks from flowing, and they cant stop his eyes from sparkling. So happy. So beautiful. Her breath goes fast as she feels a light slice of cold down her arm. Dark red liquid drips onto the white snow of his boots as he drops her onto the ground. She is still happy as he walks back into the forest.

Reddit brought me here because I was looking for this song and the posters there guided me to it. I did not know the name of this song, but it had burnt itself into my memory after endless repetitions.

This song used to play during the KDKA televised death notices during the 1992 newspaper strike in Pittsburgh. Because the workers at the Pittsburgh Press went on strike, that meant both the Press and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette stopped printing. Since this was before the "information superhighway" known as the Internet became a mainstream means of dispensing information, the death notices that were usually printed in the obituaries section had to be aired on the news broadcasts. Day after day I would hear this tune as the names of people who passed away were shown on screen.

WTAE also aired death notices to a different tune, but because I don't remember that tune at all, this is the one that had been stuck in my mind, a tune without a name, until right now.

Thank you for posting this. This is one of my unsolved mysteries of my childhood.

just wonderful!! this music makes me dream of living in the mountains in my cabin watching the fire,looking out my rustic window towards the lake where the fish are jumping and deer walk across my view as they feed gracefully on Gods great earth.
