He "stumbled" onto a different path in the early 80s. Now working as a seminal new age artist, though he prefers the label "contemporary instrumental", his piano-driven music has attracted a wide variety of fans, with multiple albums under his belt. He is perhaps best known for 'Cristofori's Dream', certified gold by the RIAA in 1993.

Nightfall is amazing, and a beautiful song to demonstrate that. It's the time when you can get in from work and relax, the most relaxing time of day.. is night.

I can literally feel the sun setting and the moon rising right from the start of this song. The cars on the roads start to disappear. Lights inside houses fade to black. Stars appear on a clear night. As if I was walking on a quiet suburban street where everything was silent, the only sound being the wind and the nighttime creatures. This song is just so...simple, yet gorgeous and emotional. So typical of David Lanz to tug on emotions when he writes ballads like this

I wouldn't have made it through college if it weren't for these soothing tunes chilling me out while trying to study for mid-terms and practicals
