He "stumbled" onto a different path in the early 80s. Now working as a seminal new age artist, though he prefers the label "contemporary instrumental", his piano-driven music has attracted a wide variety of fans, with multiple albums under his belt. He is perhaps best known for 'Cristofori's Dream', certified gold by the RIAA in 1993.

I found this song in 1999 to play for my Mom's funeral. My family loved it so much that when my Mom's brother died 3 months later, my Aunt wanted that song played. Now my niece is getting married and she wants it played while her brother walks my sister down the aisle. This song is interwoven in our family memories...happy and sad. Thank you David!

The first 30 seconds of this song are some of the most emotionally sad notes I've ever heard in my life. I envision an angel crying softly and tears dropping from heaven. Something extremely sad. For 20 years, this song still contains that power to move me. Return to the Heart isn't just a song I think Lanz just sat down and wrote. It was felt and then brought to life through real emotion and his depiction of what beauty truly is. And the same could be said for a lot of his slow pieces.

He wrote this song for his wife when she finally met the daughter she gave up for adoption. I found this song about 28 years ago playing in a mall store. I immediately bought the album, got the piano music and played it for many occasions. I learned the story that was printed on the inside of the CD cover (that ages me). It made me cry the first time I heard it. Imagine being a 16 year old girl shopping at the mall and hearing this song and start crying in public. Powerful.

Fun fact: David wrote this song for his wife and her biological daughter whom she had to give up for adoption as a young woman (for reasons that were not given in the source of information i read) during their reunion when the daughter was all grown up, he saw the resemblance of beauty they shared. The experience moved him and he was inspired to make this song. So beautiful!!!💜💜💜 This song will always remind me of being a little girl. My mother used to play it all the time on the album Close To The Heart (which is where i found the information i listed) it brings back my childhood and brings tears to my eyes😥😥 happy and sad i suppose.. Now i play it for my baby boy, mostly during his naps💤😴 he loves it☺☺💚💚💚
