I wonder why he was like that? Insecurity about his looks maybe? Or was it just who he was? Someone else mentioned that he felt that if you saw his face, his "voice actor" persona would be taken away. But yeah this is a very rare interview where we can actually see him speak and Youtube better not take it down.

According to both Jim Davis and Mark Evanier, part of the reasin Lorenzo Music wanted to keep his face hidden was to keep up the mystery of what his character Carlton (from Rhoda) to look like. Director Phil Roman also commented that Lorenzo was also just a very private person.
I have a magazine from 1990 that has an interview with him where Lorenzo says another reason he didn't bother showing his face is because his face and voice don't really match, so people think the photo is fake.

I was lucky enough to know Lorenzo Music and his wonderful family. I grew up with them two doors away from my grandparent's lake home in MN. He and his wife Henrietta were always very honest, open, and kind people. They were very talented and funny! Lorenzo was present when I was proposed to and I told him I was so glad he could be there... His reply was, "thanks for waiting"... I could go on and on... He is very missed and I plan to share the lake with him someday... :-)

Let's not forget that Lorenzo was also a talented writer and composer, having co-created and written the Bob Newhart show and composing the theme song. He also wrote for The Smother Brothers, Mary Tyler Moore, and Rhoda. He was also an incredibly generous man, frequently manning suicide prevention hotlines and giving huge donations to charity, and was married to the same woman for over 40 years. Truly a legend in his own time.

It's kind of surreal to actually see Lorenzo Music speak in an actual conversation. For some reason, it's easy for me to think that he was always putting on that sleepy, deadpan, laid back voice for his characters. But it turns out that he was just using his natural voice for "comedic effect".

@port566 I read that he appeared on Password in 1974 when they had TV writers play (right before the All Stars Format began). After Garfield started, he mainly wanted to remain faceless to preserve Garfield's mystic. I never saw pictures of his face until after he died.

I'm convinced a lot of Garfield's success as a cartoon character had to do with his voice provided by Lorenzo Music - he added a softness, an easygoing personality, a sweetness. Otherwise, Garfield can come across as cruel and selfish.

This voice is the voice I heard all through the eighties and nineties on my Saturday mornings as a child. Garfield was and still is my favorite cartoon show ever. Garfield the cute little smart ass cat that loves lasagna and kicking Odie off of the table and making fun of his nerdy owner.

I can definitely hear some similarities between Lorenzo and Bill Murray's regular voices. Which is why Bill is probably my second favourite Garfield voice behind the obvious.

Hardly - he appeared onscreen numerous times during the 60's and 70's, A quick google reveals this. You're right that he tended to hide his face from the 80's onwards, though.

I give Bill Murray all the credit in the world for trying, and he actually didn’t do half bad at it. He got at least part of the tone and inflections right...but Lorenzo IS the voice of Garfield, and there will never be another like him.

It's weird when I see him speak the voice fits fine, but when I see the cat speak it works fine. Normally when I see voice actor I can't shake either the real guy (Paddington Bear is still agent Q to me no matter what I see before me) or the character, Rob Paulsen is always Pinky to me. Mr. Music went out in a hard way but he blessed us all before he did. Thanks for video Brad Benge and thanks to Mr. Music. RIP.

It's not just the voice, his acting style is absolutely perfect for this character.

It never bothered me that no other Garfield sounded like Lorenzo, that makes sense.
It bothers me that no other actor nailed the performance as well as he did.

It's admittedly true that most other Garfield VAs tend to sound as if they're exaggeratedly mumbling (in an overly nasal or goofy way), whereas Lorenzo Music's original voice is more comparable to a steady drawl (and spoken surprisingly fast relative to some of his successors), which I find more effectively maintains the deadpan tone of Garfield's quips.

I think this is awesome. A very rare interview of him in front of a camera and damn it's so weird seeing him speak as himself and not as that fat lazy cat. He will always be Garfield to me, it was kind of a trip hearing him as Carlton the Doorman lol. The live-action movies were honestly garbage. No disrespect to Bill Murray but even he thought it was some of the worst work he ever did. Sadly I never watched The Real Ghostbusters because I was 2 when it ended. I am guessing this is from 1982 because that's when Here Comes Garfield first premiered. Imagine if Mr. Music was still alive and doing the voice.

The funny thing...Lorenzo did the voice of Garfield the cartoon and Peter Venkman in the Ghostbusters cartoon. Bill Murray did the voice of Garfield in the movies and was Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters. Interesting. 🤔😉

Garfield at heart is a stoner kitty. He just wants to lay around and will only put in effort if he can be extra lazy or eat something really good afterwards. He doesn't waste any effort. Lorenzo Music was perfect because he played him like he was more than willing to sleep his way to 4/20 - unless someone had lasagna kicking around. Do cats really like that stuff?
