Mountains
David O'Dowda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Thrown,
From the fading sky,
Our hope,
Will find us,
Our hope,
From the way we fly,
Will rise,
Like mountains.
Like mountains.

Torn,
And I'm holding on.
My heart,
Is silence.
My heart.
From the fruit of love,
Is bound,

Like mountains.
Like mountains

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of David O'Dowda's song "Mountains" capture the feeling of being adrift, of being thrown from someplace stable and secure, into a chaotic and unpredictable environment. The image of hope finding someone who is lost, as well as the idea that the hope- like mountains- will rise up despite the turmoil, is a powerful one. The second half of the first verse switches to the more personal portrayal of the singer. He is torn and holding on; his heart is in a state of silence. However, even though the fruit of his love is bound, like mountains, it is a sign that he is enduring, surviving, and even thriving, despite the struggles.

The chorus of "Mountains" becomes a kind of meditation on the symbolism of the mountain. The idea is that, in the face of adversity, one can become like a mountain, rising above the turmoil and chaos of the world. The second stanza refers to being torn and holding on, strong enough to withstand life's hardships. The singer's heart, like a mountain, is rooted and unmovable, even when it seems that everything else is shifting and changing.
