Come Thou Fount
David Potter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come thou fount of every blessing
to my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy
Never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise His name I'm fixed upon it
Name of thy redeeming love

Hither to thy love has blessed me
Thou has brought me to this place
And I know thy hand will bring me
Safely home by light of grace

For Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed his precious blood

Oh to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to thee

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart
O, take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart

O, take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above

Overall Meaning

David Potter's "Come Thou Fount" is an awe-inspiring hymn that speaks on the mercy and grace of God. The lyrics start by acknowledging God as the fount of every blessing which means everything good in life flows from Him. The song is a testimony of the many ways that God has blessed and continues to bless the singer. The first two lines show an adoration of God's grace, and the third line states that His mercy is never-ending, which is the reason for songs of praise.

In the second verse, the lyrics continue to ask God to teach the singer a melodious sonnet. The song then acknowledges the name of Jesus, which is the name of His redeeming love. The third verse speaks of the blessings that God has bestowed upon the songwriter. He acknowledges that God's love has brought him to this place, and the songwriter is confident that God's hand will bring him home, safely guided by grace.

The Fourth verse speaks to the Songwriter's salvation story. He talks about being lost and wandering away from God and how Jesus rescued him from that dangerous situation by interposing His precious blood. The last two verses talk about the desperate need for God's grace daily. The writer acknowledges that he is prone to wander from the love of God and asks God to bind his heart with His goodness tightly. The lyrics speak to the brokenness of the human condition and the need for divine intervention in our lives to live righteously.
