I Could Never Be President
David Ruffin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I became President, I know I won`t last a day
I would lower all the taxes just to suit your taste
I'd bring home all the fellers from over in Viet Nam
Station them around your door so the world can`t do you no harm
I'd name every street in the city, Honey, after you (yeah yeah yeah)
In the fight against poverty, there`s no limit to what I`d do

I could never be President
Just as long as I`m lovin` you
I could never be President
Just as long as I`m lovin` you, you
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Honey I would make you, the first lady of the land
Don`t you know I'd place presidental powers in your hand
Congress would veto the first bill I would pass
First would be: tear the Whitehouse down, build you a house of glass
And stake out the Navy on every downtown street
So your little feet won`t get so tired when you go on a shopping spree

I could never be President
Just as long as I`m lovin` you
I could never be President
Just as long as I`m lovin` you, you
Ouww! Ouwwwwww!
(I could never be President)
(I could never be President)

Honey to make sure, you never never have a care
I'd open up the door to Fort Knox, tell you to help yourself
And give you a nation, if that didn't seem to do
I'd send up a Gemini player to stake a claim on the moon for you

I could never be President
Just as long as I'm lovin' you
I could never be President
Just as long as I'm lovin`'you
I'd give you a nation
If that didn`t seem to do
I could never be your President
Just as long as I'm lovin' you
Wooooe baby

Just as long as I'm lovin' you
Ouwwwwww

Overall Meaning

David Ruffin's song "I Could Never Be President" is a love song in which the singer declares his inability to be president of the United States because he cannot be without his love interest. The lyrics contain several humorous and exaggerated promises that he would make to maintain the love and happiness of his lover. He declares his intention to lower taxes, bring home all the soldiers from Vietnam, station them around his lover's residence to keep her safe, and name every street in the city after her. These declarations are over-the-top promises meant to display the depth of his love for her. He would also make her the first lady of the land, give her the power of the presidential office, and stake out the Navy on every downtown street so that her little feet won't get tired while she goes on shopping sprees.

The song's message is clear: the singer would rather be with his lover than be the President of the United States. By stating that he cannot be President, he emphasizes the strength of his love and complete devotion to his partner. The song, released in 1970, gained popularity and became a top 40 hit on both the R&B and pop charts. It is a testament to Ruffin's soulful voice and the message of true love that resonates with many listeners.

Didn't know David Ruffin recorded this tune. Only heard Johnnie Taylor's version until now. David does a good job on this one. You can make out the lyrics much better on David's version. Love it!!

This is the mighty David Ruffin! Now even though I'm sure "The world's greatest bassist", James Jamerson is playing here, this cut illustrates, as Soul Man Carlton J. Smith pointed out to me many years ago, the pointed difference between Stax and Motown. Listen to this and JT's original and you'll hear and feel the difference.

Not .any people heard this version because this is the album that berry Gordy chose not to promote. David,s first solo album hit big. This was his second solo album. This one is even greater.( all hit material ). Berry just didn,t want david to top the temptations after they fired him. Shame on berry.
