Statue Of A Fool
David Ruffin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere there should be, for all the world to see
A statue of a fool made of stone
An image of a man who let love slip through his hand
And then let him stand there all alone

So, build a statue and, oh, build it high
So the world can see
And inscribe, 'The World's Greatest Fool'
And name it after me

Mmm, and there on his face, a gold tear should be placed
To honor every tear he shed
And I think it would show and everyone would know
Concealed inside is a broken heart

So, build a statue and, oh, build it high
So the world can see
And inscribe, 'The World's Greatest Fool'
And name it after me

So, build a statue and, oh, build it high
So that all can see
And inscribe, 'The World's Greatest Fool'
And name it after me, yeah, yeah
And name it after me

Overall Meaning

David Ruffin's song "Statue Of A Fool" is a soulful ballad that is filled with sorrow and regret. It is a song about a man who realizes too late that he has lost the love of his life, and he is now standing alone in the world. The lyrics talk about how there should be a statue built to commemorate him as the "World's Greatest Fool" who let love slip through his hands but could not hold onto it. The image of the stone statue of a man standing alone and broken-hearted while the world watches on is a powerful one.

The lyrics of the song describe how a statue of a man should be built, which represents his foolishness in losing the love of his life. The statue should have a gold tear on his face to represent every tear that he shed for his lost love. The song speaks about how the statue is a symbolic representation of the man's broken heart that will forever be concealed. The lyricist compares the man to a statue, which emphasizes the idea that he has become a lifeless representation of himself, which is tragic and sad.

In conclusion, “Statue of A Fool” is a beautiful song with a melancholic melody that has been sung and reinterpreted by many artists, such as Jack Greene, Ricky van Shelton, and Aaron Neville. The song resonates with many people who have loved and lost and must live with the regret of not holding onto what they had. Only a Musical Genius could write something like this at 18

Mark Grimes

He didn't actually write this song.... but he always claimed to for some reason

@Mark Grimes I don't know why he would either. It has to be some truth in it somehow, he met someone and they wrote it together, Something because it makes no sense. Why pick that song if you going lie about a song? It was so unfortunate that David never wrote a memoir before he died. He always said he would one day. So many unanswered questions that only can be answered by him.

@natalie p David’s widow wrote a book, A Memoir: David Ruffin-My Temptation. She states that David wrote it and released the song in 1958 under the name Little Eddie Bush when he was 17. I read this on a website call Country Thang Daily. If this is true I don’t know why he wouldn’t of sued for authorship and royalties.

I’m sorry this song does not sound like any country song I ever heard. David by default. Also, you’re not gonna tell me some white dude didn’t steal a 17-year-olds song? Please
