Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song tell a story of someone who is seeking the love of their crush and seeks the help of the "witch doctor" for advice on how to win their heart. The witch doctor suggests a specific set of words and sounds that will supposedly make the crush fall in love with the singer. The singer takes the advice and recites the words to their crush, believing that this spell will finally make them theirs.

The lyrics have a playful and lighthearted tone, with a catchy tune that emphasizes the repetitive sounds of "oo-ee, oo-ahh ting-tang, walla-walla bing-bang." The concept of seeking supernatural help to solve romantic problems is a recurring theme in popular music, and in this song, the witch doctor serves as a symbol for a person's own insecurities and fears. The singer is using the figurative concept to justify their actions and to feel better about themselves.

Overall, this song is a fun and whimsical love song that reflects the simplicity and humor of pop music in the 1950s. It showcases the playful and humorous side of falling in love and trying to win someone's heart and has become a classic in the genre of novelty music.

This predates " The Chipmunks" Christmas song.
David Seville, real name Ross Bagdasarian was a west coast pop band leader who as much as anybody refined the method of recording vocals at extremely slow speed than playing back at "normal" speed to create the high pitched voices on this and the later " Chipmunk" releases.
One thing to note, on the high pitched parts , the lyrics are extremely enunciated in normal voice at the slower speed so that in playback, the words are delivered in clear diction.
The Chipmunks, which did not exist beyond altered voices on tape eventually became a 60s TV cartoon series with an animated David Seville as the,uh, parent figure for 3 manic rodents.
Various versions of the Chipmunk characters have aired on TV through the years and a live action/ CGI film was released.
" Witch Doctor" is where it all started.

And that's also the same way they got comedic fast-motion sequences as in old movies..._under_crank WHILE filming, then play back normal speed. I just thought that was interesting, that the exact same thing works for both sound and video. :)

Carly Steffen

And The Chipmunks were named after members of the Liberty Records staff: Alvin “Al” Bennett (the president), Simon “Si” Waronker (the chairman/founder), and Theodore “Ted” Keep (the engineer).

Which Is True Because That’s How Alvin And The Chipmunks Was Created

Was there I way back then to increase pitch without changing the speed? Is that only possible thanks to computers?

PJ Riverdale

@Pablo C The ability to maintain the original key was never possible in analog purely by changing tape speed. The key lowered or raised as speed changed.
One could work out harmonies as evidenced by the Les Paul and Mary Ford records and copied on the Chipmunk records by altering playback speed.
In Analog, with a VSO ( variable speed oscillator), one could also raise or lower pitch to match a root note or key, but the actual speed of the passage would be altered if not worked out in advance.
Eventide Harmonizers were a step in the direction of feeding a passage in and then layering harmonies.
One of the advantages of digital production is that all the laborious timing and harmonic calculations are already done for you.
