On the Street Where You Live
David Whitfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have often walked down this street before
But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before.
All at once am I sev'ral stories high,
Knowing I'm on the street where you live.

Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour out of ev'ry door?
No, it's just on the street where you live.

And oh, the towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near!
The very powering feeing
that any second you may suddenly appear!

People stop and stare. They don't bother me,
For there's nowhere else on earth that I would rather be.

Let the time go by I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live.

Overall Meaning

The opening line of David Whitfield's song "On the Street Where You Live" creates a sense of familiarity as the singer has walked down this street several times before. However, in this particular moment, something is different. The pavement feels unfamiliar and the singer is on a high. The sudden change in the singer's mood is due to the fact that they are on the street where their love interest lives. This street holds a lot of significance for the singer because the love of their life resides there.

As the song progresses, the singer questions if this street is enchanted or if it's just their imagination. The imagery of lilac trees and larks signifies the romanticism of the street, and the singer's belief that enchantment does indeed pour out of every door. The chorus emphasizes the singer's feelings of being near to their love interest, and the power that these feelings hold. They are willing to let time pass by just to stay on the street where their love interest lives.

The final verse adds more depth to the song, as the singer acknowledges the stares of the people around them. The singer's love for their significant other is so overpowering that they do not care for the opinions of those around them. This demonstrates the strength of the singer's feelings and the importance that this street holds in their life.
