In his day he was fabulously popular and sang to capacity crowds. He appeared on the Ed Sullivan show several times with great aplomb. In the later 1950s his style of singing had to compete with the likes of Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley ,and by the early 1960s had moved into musicals such as "The Desert Song" and "Rose Marie" and recorded classic albums such as "Alone" with his wonderful semi operatic style of singing.
In his day he sang a large range of songs and was sometimes likened to the great Mario Lanza. He just loved travelling, and visited Canada and especially Australia many times. His great hits were those he recorded with Mantovani, his favorite being "When You lose the one you love". Many of his songs were written for his voice alone with well known exceptions being "I Believe" (1953) and "That's When your Heartaches Begin" (1958).

Come away, come away with William Tell
Come away to the land he loved so well
What a day, what a day when the apple fell
For Tell and Switzerland
Come away with Tell to the mountainside
Looking down to the pass where the tyrants ride
Set a bolt to your bow and down they go
For Tell and Switzerland
We are simple peasant folk
We will not fell a foreign yoke
Our freedom song will echo on
We'll fight for what is right.
Hurry on, hurry on there's a pungent cell
Hurry on, hurry on there's a noose as well
What we must face from the jaws of hell
For Tell and Switzerland.
We lived our lives, we loved our friends
We never wanted more
We had the skill to plough and till
But not the art of war
But now the tyrant from the plains
Steals up to take our lands.
Instead of spade we wield the blade
Our life is in our hands
Follow on, follow on with the leaders feel
With a thrust of a pike and a clash of steel
Follow on with the fight till the tyrants reel
For Tell and Switzerland
Give em one for the day they bared the grain
Give em two for the night that Fritz was slain
Give em three, give em four and hooray for more
For Tell and Switzerland
The shepherd's crook, the reaping hook
Has taken on a warlike look
With blades we've beaten from the plough
We reap a harvest now.
Come away, come away with William Tell,
Come away to the land he loved so well
Fit a bolt to your bow, and away we go
For Te-e-e-ell, and Switzerland.

Thanks for uploading this.
Although I'm only 32 I really, really enjoy all of those classic action adventure shows (along with sit coms and SF) from TV's golden age, much better than the bulk of the rubbish that my friends at collage watch nowadays, although that said I do quite enjoy some of the Superhero movies, TV shows and comics...
At home I have ALL of Star Trek, Doctor Who, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Quatermass, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Tarzan, Blake's 7, The Prisoner, James Bond (including the books and newspaper strips) and the whole Gerry Anderson Canon plus much, much more.
Just asking do you have by any chance the original show, and if you do could you consider uploading it?
I know that it was put out on DVD a few years ago but (and I will be honest here) due to my limited funds, due to my having to spend alot of money on my medications (thus I have pleanty of time to watch old shows and movies when I am ill) I cannot affored it right now but I would like to watch it as I have already seen 'Sir Lancealot' and (as stated above) 'Robin Hood' and very much enjoyed them, it would mean a lot to me if you could do so.
Thanks

Reminds me of my childhood this was one of my favourites
@prorish1
This brings back memories of the “William Tell” television series which we watched every week on the London television- thank you.
@geoffreydutton2234
Remember this wonderful series starring my alpine hero William Tell played by Conrad Phillips. The attractive Hedda played by Jennifer Jane. And the nefarious Gessler played superbly by Willoughby Goddard. That's what I like about YouTube a chance to go down memory lane.
@MrColin0202
The theme song to my favourite historical adventure series. The great thing about this recording is that it sounds identical to the one you heard on the series. David Whitfield with the Roland Shaw orchestra. Excellent.
@OldiesAl
I think David would have done a good job on the Robin Hood theme too
@geoffreydutton2234
Great series of my alpine hero
@geoffreydutton2234
Remember this series when I was a youngster. Loved Hedda Tell. Conrad Phillips made the character come alive.
@andrewlivesey2777
Brilliant, what a singer he was.
@deniswilson8152
Dude is perfectly cast for this song...and the lyrics are haunting!!
@helenschulz7563
We loved that TV series. I wonder if it is on streaming now.
