Murder
David Gilmour Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some of them standing, some were waiting in the line
As if there was something that they thought they might find
Taking some strength from the feelings that always were shared
And in the background, the eyes that just stared

What was it brought you out here in the dark?
Was it your only way of making your mark
Did you get rid of all the voices in your head?
Do you now miss them and the things that they said?

On your own admission you raised up the knife
And you brought it down ending another man's life
When it was done you just threw down the blade
While the red blood spread wider like the anger you made

I don't want this anger that's burning in me
It's something from which it's so hard to be free

But none of the tears that we cry in sorrow or rage
Can make any difference, or turn back the page

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Gilmour's "Murder" narrates the aftermath of a deadly crime scene, where the singer talks in first person to the killer. The opening lines describe a group of people waiting in line, but some of them are standing, and some are waiting. This line conveys a sense of anticipation and anxiety that surrounds the situation. The people present seem to be searching and longing for something they cannot retrieve. As the description moves on, the words suggest that whatever it was that people were waiting for, it was not found, and their unfulfilled desires remain piqued. In the background, we see eyes staring, a silent witness to the crime.

The tone shifts slightly in the second verse as the singer addresses the killer. The singer wants to know what drove the killer to go out and take another person's life with a knife. The lyrics speculate that perhaps the killer was looking to make a mark, to leave some kind of impression. However, the nagging voice of anxiety and dread in the killer's head may have driven them to madness. But, now that the deed is done, the silence that follows is deafening. The lyrics urge the killer to share whether they miss the voices in their head, which earlier fueled their anger.

The final verse is a direct conversation with the killer. The singer tells the killer that they don't want the same anger that fuels the killer's actions. Amidst feelings of sorrow and confusion, nothing can undo or change what has happened. The song ends on a somber note.

Fretless bass lines by the enormous Pino Palladino are sublime. Never had David such a great bass player, Waters included.

@CJFerg81

I'm sure Guy Pratt would knock it out of the park if he was given the chance to play this live with DG.

@samuelluria4744

Marcelo Soto-Quiroga - Lol, Waters plays bass about as well as I play the motherfucking spoons.

@timc2219

waters was a mediocre player at best... wrote some really good stuff, gotta give him that... sadly not a fan, he did to floyd what yoko did to the beatles... then again, after DSOTM, was there anywhere to go? David Gilmour and Polly Samson took them in a good direction, and best of all they all looked happy to play together, with waters, the tension appeared to make it more of a job than a joy...

@elausente21

@@CJFerg81 no doubt, Pino is amazing, but Guy is extremely versatile

@jameshosford4627

@@timc2219 Can we please get over this nonsense, racist, misogynist notion that Yoko broke up The Beatles?

Also where else did they have to go? Maybe three more of the greatest albums of all time?

Brilliant song! Easily one of my favorite Gilmour pieces. RIP John Lennon.

@powertuber3.047

The quintessential Gilmour vocal.

@nightmission

I remember buying this album when it first released.. I was 14 years old and when that needle dropped and I heard this song , I became a life long fan of the artist that David is as a individual. and not just a part of Pink Floyd... He is one of those guitarist that leaves you with the impression , that his heart and soul are speaking through his guitar...

@ericq9220

Nicely put 🙏
