Tea For Two
Tony Bennett
(Irving Caesar/Vincent Youmans)

I'm discontented with homes that are rented so I have invented my own.
Darling this place is a lover's oasis where life's weary chase is unknown.
Far from the cry of the city, where flowers pretty caress the streams,
Cozy to hide in, to love side-by-side in. Don't let it abide in my dreams.

Picture you upon my knee, just tea for two and two for tea,
Just me for you and you for me, alone!
Nobody near us, to see us or hear us,
No friends or relations on weekend vacations,
We won't have it known, dear, that we have a telephone, dear.
Day will break and you'll awake and start to bake
A sugar cake for me to take for all the boys to see.
We will raise a family, a boy for you, a girl for me,
Oh, can't you see how happy life would be?

You are revealing a plan so appealing I can't help but falling for you,
Darling, I planned it; can't you understand it is yours to command it, so do.
All of your schemes I'm admiring, they're worth desiring but can't you see,
I'd like to wait there for some future date dear;
it won't be too late, dear, for me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Tea for Two" by Davis Lew and his Orchestra, as sung by Tony Bennett, depict a desire for a private and romantic escape from the chaos of everyday life. The singer expresses discontentment with rented homes and has instead created their own oasis for two, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The setting is described as cozy - perfect for hiding away and cherishing the presence of a loved one. The plan is to have nobody near them to witness their happiness, and to not make it known that they even have a telephone. The suggestion is that this is to be a secret from the public, a desire for intimacy and privacy. As the sun rises, the singer envisions waking up to their partner having made a sugar cake for them to take out to the world, and they hope to raise a happy family together.

Overall, "Tea for Two" is a song about longing for a quiet and intimate love, away from prying eyes and worldly pressures. It is a dream of finding a place where the couple can enjoy privacy, happiness, and the sweetness of life together.

Trombonology Erstwhile

This is the earliest version I've heard of this famous one -- a very nifty arrangement, in which the muted trumpets employ the doo-wacka-doo phrasing that had become so popular in the day.  ... Love those tea-takers -- and the final image gives new meaning to "Tea for Two"!

dzheger two

Sparkling version of this favorite. My mother used to sing it for me and my sister. The images of the tea drinkers are charming, especially the final one.
