Medicine
Dayglow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you know what it means
When you think on a screen?
Can you make memories
If they're just make believe?

Oh, I don't know if I can take
You seriously these days
So suddenly everything's changed
And we're standing in the same place

Oh no
I'm on the outside looking in
I never said what I really meant
I wasn't made to be medicine for you
It's true
You can't seem to make up your mind
When I told you I did with mine
You won't know if you never try
It's true

Do you know what it means?
Is a sign what you see?
Maybe we could agree
But that's not up to me

Oh, I don't know if I can say
Much more about this debate
So suddenly nothing has changed
I've been reading on the wrong page

Oh no
I'm on the outside looking in
I never said what I really meant
I wasn't made to be medicine for you
It's true
You can't seem to make up your mind
When I told you I did with mine
You won't know if you never try
It's true
Ooh

Oh
I'm on the outside looking in
I never said what I really meant
I wasn't made to be medicine for you
It's true
You can't seem to make up your mind
When I told you I did with mine

You won't know if you never try
It's true

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dayglow's "Medicine" appear to explore themes of uncertainty and miscommunication in a relationship. The opening lines ask whether it is possible to create memories when they are merely constructed on a screen, questioning the authenticity and solidity of a connection. The uncertainty continues as the verse progresses, with the singer expressing doubt about being taken seriously and how everything seemingly changed so suddenly, despite standing in the same place as before.

The chorus, "I'm on the outside looking in, I never said what I really meant, I wasn't made to be medicine for you," reinforces the idea that there is a disconnect between the singer's intentions and their communication. They feel powerless and unable to provide the partner with what they need. Lines like "You can't seem to make up your mind, when I told you I did with mine," suggests that there's some turmoil between the two characters, with a lack of certainty or agreement on what they want from the relationship.

The second verse offers no resolution or clarity, with the singer admitting they don't know what they can say about the debate and feeling like they have been reading the wrong page. Overall, the song seems to paint a picture of a relationship that is strained by difficulties in communication and an overall lack of understanding between the two individuals.

@Baveryberberthebest

why does this perfectly represent the relationship between Eddie Kasprak, his mom, and his wife when he gets older

for example:

"can you make memories if they're just make believe" could represent how all the diseases and medication that Sonia made him take were fake and purposeless and those diseases prevented him a lot of things like in the book where he wasn't permitted to participate in gym because of it

"I don't know if i can take you seriously these days" represents how he confronted Sonia about his fake medications and could also represent how in the book he couldn't take Myra seriously ever especially when she was crying and begging him to stay

"So suddenly everything's changed" explains how Eddie's perspective on Sonia and Myra change after he realized how naive he had been when he pretended that their behavior customary

"I'm on the outside looking in" represents how even he could recognize Sonia and Myra's similar behaviors when he was older

"I never said what I really meant" represents how he was scared at first to tell his mother how she was treating him and he was scared to tell Sonia how he didn't really ever have strong feelings for her and to compensate for his guilt of not feeling the same love she did, he bought her things.

"I wasn't made to be medicine for you" represents how Sonia used Eddie to make herself feel better and how Myra was okay with him buying her material objects to make her feel better because he felt too bad to express his feelings.

"you can't seem to make up your mind when i told you i didn't mind" Explains perfectly how in the book he was fine with doing things that she thought was way to dangerous like how he didn't mind gym while she was yelling at the gym teacher that he wasn't fit to participate

"you wont know if you've never tried" explains how Sonia doesn't know that he's to sick to do these things if she's never let him in the first place.

"maybe we could agree, but that's not up to me" explains how he doesn't have a say in all of the things Sonia doesn't allow him to do

"I don't know if I can take much more about this debate" Represents how he finally confronted Sonia in the movie.

" So suddenly nothing has changed" Explains exactly how he married someone so similar to his mother who treated him horribly which just adds to the evidence of the fact that he has mommy issues.

"I've been reading on the wrong page" explains how he instead of getting away from the selfish ways that his mother treated him, he repeated the the inflict by marrying someone so similar to his mom.
