Me Myself and I
De-La Soul Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mirror, mirror on the wall
Tell me, mirror, what is wrong?
Can it be my de la clothes
Or is it just my de la song?

What I do ain't make-believe
People say I sit and try
But whan it comes to being de la

It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I

Now you tease my plug one style
And my plug one spectacles
You say plug one and two are hippies
No, we're not, that's pure plug bull

Always pushing that we've formed an image
There's no need to lie
When it comes to being plug one

It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I

Proud, I'm proud of what I am
Poems I speak are plug two type
Please oh please let plug two be
Himself, not what you read or write

Right is wrong when hype is written
On the soul, de la that is,
Style is surely our own thing
Not the false disguise of showbiz

De la soul is from the soul
And this fact I can't deny
Strictly from the dan called stuckie
And from me myself and I

It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I

Glory, glory hallelu
Glory for plugs one and two
But that glory's been denied
By kizids and dookie eyes

People think they dis my person
By stating I'm darkly pack
I know this so I point at q-tip
And he states, 'black is black'

Mirror mirror on the wall,
Shovel chestnuts in my path
Please keep on up with the nuts
So I don't get in aftermath

But if I do I'll calmly punch them
In the fourth day of July
'Cause they tried to mess with
Third degree, that's me myself and I

It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I

It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of De-La Soul's "Me Myself and I" are a commentary on the pressures and criticisms the group felt in creating their music. The song begins with mirror talk, asking what the fault could be for De La's perceived failure. The lyrics are reflective of the internal struggle of a group that wants to showcase their own unique identity but is nagged by public opinion. Their music is seen as different and bizarre, and people often ridicule their style. But De La Soul believes that their talent and unique brand of hip-hop comes from within themselves; it is them and only them who make it happen. They are asking the mirror for clarification on why they are being judged.

The second verse highlights the group's frustration with the false public image people create about them, leading to assumptions based on the rumors started by the media. They discuss their "plug one" and "plug two" identities and dismiss the general public's perception of them as hippies. Despite their confidence, De La Soul admits that they have seen shows that are mere caricatures of what they are, as promoters often push for a stereotypical image of the group. They express pride in what they produce and invite people to judge them based on their music and not on their physical presence.

The final verse directly addresses the insults and discrimination faced by the group. They express their hurt feelings about their dark skin and defend themselves with the words of Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. De La Soul recognizes that they must defend themselves, and they are prepared to do so. The song concludes with another "mirror, mirror on the wall" reference, where the group prays to avoid any obstacles or hindrances in their journey.

@@dj_ath Received mine yesterday (Mexico City). Extremely happy with the fact I could finally get my hands on a new one for a decent price. Discogs was showing the past 3 years ridiculous prices of over 800 USD.

@Unheardvoicesmagazine

My uncle Sylvester Covin is in this video (Heavy set guy with fur hat, big chains, and sunglasses). Ironically, he passed away suddenly 6 days after Trugoy. It gives me solace knowing I can always see my uncle while also listening to one of the greatest rap songs of all time. RIP Uncle & Trugoy.
