Experiment
De-Lovely Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To meet less fortunate mortals
There's just one final message I would give to you
You all have learned reliance
On the sacred teachings of science
So I hope, through life, you never will decline
In spite of philistine, defiance
To do what all good scientists do
Experiment
Make it your motto day and night
Experiment
And it will lead you to the light
The apple on the top of the tree
Is never too high to achieve
So take an example from Eve
Experiment
Be curious
Though interfering friends may frown
Get furious
At each attempt to hold you down
If this advice you always employ
The future can offer you infinite joy
And merriment
Experiment and you'll see
Be curious
Though interfering friends may frown
Get furious
At each attempt to hold you down
If this advice you'll always employ
The future can offer you infinite joy
And merriment
Experiment and you'll see
The song "Experiment" from the 2004 biopic De-Lovely is a celebratory call to embrace the scientific method as a way of life. The lyrics encourage listeners to approach the world with curiosity and an openness to experimentation, emphasizing that even failures can be valuable learning experiences. The song likens the pursuit of knowledge through scientific exploration to the story of Eve and the apple, suggesting that the most rewarding discoveries often come from reaching for something just out of reach.
The lyrics reflect the film's portrayal of the life of composer Cole Porter, who was known for his experimental approach to music and his willingness to push boundaries in both his personal and professional life. The song captures the spirit of exploration and risk-taking that defined Porter's life and art, celebrating his legacy as a groundbreaking figure in the world of popular music. The upbeat, playful melody and infectious chorus make "Experiment" a joyous celebration of intellectual curiosity and creative freedom.
Overall, "Experiment" is a joyful, uplifting song that celebrates the importance of experimentation and scientific curiosity. Whether taken as a direct celebration of the scientific method or as a metaphor for artistic exploration and innovation, the song is a testament to the power of human curiosity and the endless possibilities that lie open to those who approach the world with an open mind and a willingness to take risks.

@@donatodiniccolodibettobardi842 there are a good number of covers from swing and jazz artists, Cole Porter wrote the piece, as he did many of the era, and in turn some of the most famous and talented voices of that age and since have done renditions.
