True Love Leaves No Traces
Dead Famous People Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As the mist leaves no scar
On the dark green hill
So my body leaves no scar
On you and never will
Through windows in the dark
The children come, the children go
Like arrows with no targets
Like shackles made of snow

True love leaves no traces
If you and I are one
It's lost in our embraces
Like stars against the sun

As a falling leaf may rest
A moment on the air
So your head upon my breast
So my hand upon your hair

And many nights endure
Without a moon or star
So we will endure
When one is gone and far

True love leaves no traces
If you and I are one

It's lost in our embraces
Like stars against the sun

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dead Famous People's song "True Love Leaves No Traces" are a poignant exploration of the elusive nature of love. The opening lines, "As the mist leaves no scar on the dark green hill, so my body leaves no scar on you and never will," suggest that love is fleeting and ephemeral, like a mist that disappears without a trace. The comparison of the mist to the singer's body underscores the idea that love is intangible and cannot be measured or quantified.

The second stanza shifts to a description of children moving through the darkness, "Like arrows with no targets, like shackles made of snow." The image of children without direction, like arrows without a target, suggests the aimlessness of our pursuit of love. The phrase "shackles made of snow" conjures the fragility and transience of love—it is beautiful and enchanting, but it can also melt away in an instant.

The chorus, "True love leaves no traces, if you and I are one, it's lost in our embraces, like stars against the sun," emphasizes the idea that love is impossible to capture or contain. If two people are truly in love, they become one, and it is impossible to distinguish where one person ends and the other begins. This is why love "leaves no traces," it becomes seamlessly integrated into our lives.

Overall, "True Love Leaves No Traces" is a tender and poetic exploration of the mysterious nature of love. It suggests that love is not something that can be pinned down, but rather something that we experience in fleeting moments, and that its beauty lies in its transience.

Real love never leaves any permanent marks. It remains within us, and in our closeness, it's shrouded like stars that are barely visible when the sun rises.

Just like the falling leaf may sit suspended for a fleeting moment on the air, your head on my chest and my hand on your hair is a brief moment in time.

Many nights pass without any moon or stars to light our way, and like the stars, one of us may have to be away, but we will persist.
