1. Dead Flowers are an Alternative-rock-pop band from Auckland, New Zealand that released material through Wildside records in the 90's.

Dead Flowers were signed by Wildside records in 1992, they released their first single 'Lisa' which reached 27 on the New Zealand charts. Later in the year they released their debut album 'Skin of A Stone' which was recorded at Phil Rudd's (AC/DC) recording studio in Tauranga, NZ. In December '93 they released their second album 'Sweetfish'. Their third and final album was a self titled album that was released early 1998.

2. Now defunct, Dead Flowers were for many years Newcastle's kings of acid rock. Their career began inauspiciously enough with the privately pressed TV single which, to be honest, was not especially good, consisting of two grungey hard rock tracks with little hint of the psychedelic mayhem to come.

After four years of local obscurity, they were picked up by Brian Sutton's Mystic Stones label for one of its earlier releases. The resultant album Smell The Fragrance does not capture the band at their best by any means. It contained plenty of good songs - Absolution, Crackdown and the drug anthem Piece Of Sky - but one had to ask "Where's the psychedelia?". The band sounded at this time like an updated, druggy Black Sabbath or an English Monster Magnet. If the idea sounds tempting, then go for it, but there was better to come. The track Crackdown also appeared on the Underground Newcastle compilation in an exclusive "grunge" mix.

1992's Moontan is something of an acid rock classic. It opens with the storming Chocolate Staircase which uses the riff from Pink Floyd's Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun A powerfully contrasting track follows in the spacey, almost ambient, Spiral Eye before the band turn the amps up to eleven again for Filling In Time. The heavy riffing of Thought World brings side one to a close. Side two begins with another near ambient track Gaia's Love Hole which despite the awful title is an awesomely beautiful piece of music; the word "ambient" should hold no negative connotations here: this is layers of liquid guitar and brushed cymbals with pulsating bass, and delicate flute (provided by Teapot from Cheops). There follows three tracks more in the heavy, doom-laden style of their first LP. Moontan is strongly recommended. A different version of Chocolate Staircase also appeared on the Delerium compilation Fun With Mushrooms which brought the band to the attention of a wider audience.

Moontan had turned Dead Flowers into one of the hottest properties on the psychedelic scene, and Delerium scooped them for their third LP Altered State Circus which was recorded at Dave Anderson's Foel studios. This contains all the elements which made Moontan so indispensable, but there was a noticeable improvement in the production and musicianship (not that it was bad before by any means). The music was even druggier than previously and the sleeve artwork amongst the most spectacularly psychedelic ever. The music showed the band developing the ambient textures of the previous album in six slow burning, extended tracks. Highlights are The Elephant's Eye Was Eerie (eh?), the title track Altered State Circus and Slouch Factor 9. The only half way weak track was Free the Weed a rather unfocused protest song. The CD contained an extra track, the excellent thirteen minute Vodafone In Oz. Although not an improvement on Moontan the band had instead tried a slightly different musical direction and the album is recommended. The deeply laid back Warmth Within (Chemical Binoculars) was featured on the Pick 'n' Mix Delerium sampler album.

The band split following the release of Altered State Circus. Steev Swayambhunath branched out into ambient dance music, forming a band called Cubic Space Collective. (Chris Williams)

Oh they sound amazing . Love the name you gave them ! 😃 very clever . Sounds like you had a change in your soils Ph Level . This will cause the plants to change color . Here is some info on changing hydrangea color from pink to blue and back again ...

How do you control hydrangea color?
Hydrangeas are unique in that you can control their color. But keep in mind, not all hydrangea types are capable of color adjustments. Bigleaf hydrangeas, H. macrophylla, react to changes in soil pH. A low soil pH allows hydrangeas to absorb aluminum, which turns the flowers a beautiful blue color. To increase blue hydrangea flowers, lower your soil pH by adding sulfur or peat moss to the soil. You can also add additional aluminum sulfate to your soil throughout the growing season. Pink and red flowers shine when you add ground limestone to increase the pH.
A soil pH test can help you accurately adjust your hydrangea color. Avoid pH levels above 7.5 to prevent damage to the plant. No matter what adjustments you’ve made, all hydrangeas will naturally fade in the fall. Don’t worry – the plant will showcase fresh, colorful blooms again in the spring.

Dear Kelly,

Firstly thank you for the informative video. I live in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. I adore Hydrangeas but have endless trouble trying to keep them alive on my balcony so any advice you have I'd love to hear. The problem with the balcony is that it doesn't get any sun until 12:30 to 1pm when the sun is at it's hottest and the sun remains until it goes down. I've solved the placement of my present Hydrangea (Macrophylla Blue) by placing it between and Oleander and Olive tree. where there's a bit of shadow and using an umbrella to shade it for 4 hours during the hottest time of the day.
The two problems I have involve:
a) Burnt leaves and new growth and
b) No blossoms

Re a) Any leaves that get burnt I remove at the stem and new leaves form so what I have at the moment is a plant with lots of new leaves but no blossoms.
Re b) It is simply a case of having patience until the new leaves mature and bring forth blossoms?

I've also noticed since I've been trimming the dead leaves back and the new ones are developing that there are weird sort of spider webs at the stem where the new leaves are appearing.

Oh drat that is upsetting. Is she getting enough sunlight ? They need a t least 6 hours of sunlight a day in our neck of the woods . Here are a few things to consider regarding why your hydrangea may not be blooming . i hope you find this helpful . i would love to hear that you found the problem and fixed it and that your grandfather's hydrnagea is back in fine form . Make sure your hydrangea is getting enough sun and water
Make sure you are not pruning back blooms that may have formed on old wood ( like I talked about in this video )

Keep in mind that a cold snap in spring may have cause blooms to freeze off preventing blooms from coming in on the old wood .

Nitrogen can be an issue too.
Is there a chance you have too much nitrogen in your soil? This would cause super lush leaves but it would inhibit bloom growth .

If you can , have your soil tested by a local university or buy a do it your self soil testing kit .

Also make sure your hydrangeas are getting enough sunlight and water . They love water and seen them referred to as the drunks of the garden 🌸😊.

Here is some information I found on the internet explaining how to lower nitrogen in your soil if the tests show the level is too high...
Too much nitrogen in soil can harm plants, but while adding nitrogen is relatively easy, removing excess nitrogen in soil is a little trickier. Reducing nitrogen in garden soil can be done if you have patience and a little knowledge. Let’s look at how to amend too much nitrogen in the soil. Tips for Lowering Soil Nitrogen Content Using Plants That Will Reduce Nitrogen in Garden Soil In order to remove excess nitrogen in soil, you need to bind the nitrogen that is in the soil to something else. Fortunately, as a gardener, you probably grow many things that bind nitrogen — in other words, plants. Any plant will use some nitrogen in the soil, but plants like squash, cabbage, broccoli and corn use up large amounts of nitrogen while growing. By growing these plants where there is too much nitrogen in soil, the plants will use up the excess nitrogen. Be aware though, that while they will grow there, plants may look sickly and will not produce many fruits or flowers. Keep in mind that you are not growing these plants for food purposes, but rather as sponges that will help lower soil nitrogen content. Using Mulch for Removing Excess Nitrogen in Soil Many people use mulch in their garden and have problems with the mulch depleting the nitrogen in the soil as it breaks down. When you have too much nitrogen in the soil, you can use this normally frustrating problem to your benefit. You can lay mulch over the soil with too much nitrogen to help draw out some of the excess nitrogen in the soil. In particular, cheap, dyed mulch works well for this. Cheap, dyed mulch is generally made from scrap soft woods and these will use higher amounts of nitrogen in the soil as they break down. For this same reason, sawdust can also be used as a mulch to help reduce nitrogen in the soil. When you have too much nitrogen in soil, your plants may look lush and green, but their ability to fruit and flower will be greatly reduced. While you can take steps towards reducing nitrogen in garden soil, it’s best to avoid adding too much nitrogen to the soil in the first place. Use organic or chemical fertilizers with nitrogen carefully. Test your soil before you add any nitrogen to the soil to avoid having excess nitrogen in your soil. I’ve also learned to have my ph soil tested. Also I dilute food color to which ever color hydrangea I have to get deeper color. Like blue for blue, etc. Just pour the solution at the roots. Water them really good first, then saturate them really good so that the solution gets to the roots. I do this twice a year. It really works. Have your ph soil tested for sure. That will tell what nutrients your soil needs.

Great video, thank you! I am fairly comfortable with the old v. new growth and the pruning for each. Unfortunately, it still hasn’t resolved my problem. I moved to a new home with 2 hydrangea plants, although I am unsure of the type. Whatever the case, both grow on old wood. It’s taken me a couple of years and many, many videos to better understand the process, but still I have very little in the way of the flowers. One of the two has never bloomed. Both however have grown quite large and appear healthy otherwise. This past late spring, I played it safe and barely cut anything off the stems, to leave and preserve the buds so that they could produce more flowers. The smallest of the two shows absolutely no signs of any flowering, and the second only has sparse (<25%). If the latter is a late blooming plant, should it have any flowers now? And what about the one with 0 flowers? It is approximately 4 years old. lastly, I should mention that they are both in full sun (zone 4) and both planted next to our concrete block foundation and concrete walkway. Any suggestions? - Michèle

When you cut your flowers, dip in Alum, the seasoning and let sit for about 5 minutes and let the alum set, then place in cool water and they will stay beautiful and not wilt ! sooo helpful for this beginner gardener. we had endless summer put in last may and they got covered with black spots/holes in leaves. should i prune them back to ground late winter here in georgia to cure the disease? or wait and just deadhead and see what happens? thanks @KellyLehman

The spots may just be from too much water and temps dipping in late fall when the leaves were still wet and colder night temps set in . I would try to deadhead them . Pruning them back will cut off this years blooms from the old growth . good luck.

Thank you! I have had my hydrangeas for almost 15 years, and was never sure if I should prune or not - I have tried both, and found pruning to be a mistake - they would sometimes take 2 years to come back. They are hardy though. I do have a question - I live in north jersey and we have a lot of deer. They haven't seemed to eat the hydrangea in the past but this year there seems to be one who has given them a try. Do you recommend anything for deer control?

I’m with you . Less pruning seems to give me better blooms . Here are some tips on how to get rid of those hungry deer ..

🌸You can try hanging bars of Irish Spring Soap near the plants or sprinkling Irish spring soap shavings or cayenne pepper around the plant . Also, dried coyote or fox urine seem to be a deterrent. There are also sprays like Deer Off , you can try . I have some of these products on a list I created on my Amazon shop page . Good luck keeping the critters away 😊🌸

Georgia - Thanks for your helpful video. I knew some of this, but I didn't know the part about bigger blooms vs. smaller blooms. I made the mistake of pruning at the wrong time years ago when I first started planting hydrangeas and didn't get any blooms. Now I pretty much don't prune unless I have to. Ours had a fungus a couple of years ago, so I pruned, and they just began blooming later. I do prune the limelight and vanilla-strawberry because they get so big. I'm not pruning back as much since I'm hoping the stems will become stronger and not hang over so much.

Thank you! I was told 20 years ago to cut the hydrangeas within a foot of the ground every year, which I obediently did. But next spring, much green new growth from roots, but no blooms. I was highly frustrated! Now I know NOT to prune. Thanks again!

Thank you for straightening me out on the old growth, new growth. I have grown up with hydrangeas on Nantucket, and learned that we should only prune at fall. But now, with this explanation, I see what I have been doing incorrectly. This year a bush that only had 3 blooms exploded because I was lazy last year. Only goes to show less is more! Thanks! We moved into a house where the previous owners had mostly cut down the stems to the ground after the blooming season and the bush is struggling. Last blooming season it only had flowers on the very bottom (old wood that wasn’t pruned). I left it alone for a year to see what it would do and now (spring) it appears to be blooming some buds on the old wood (not sure it will be flowers) and I’m noticing a few new green stems sprouting up from the ground! I’m hoping for a recovery after a few years!

I'm so happy to find this video that gives such a clear description of how to care for my Hydrangeas! I'm from the suburbs around Philadelphia. My husband cut my Hydrangeas down to the ground a year ago and we had no flowers last year! Maybe this year we will but I told him "LEAVE THEM ALONE"!

I have a lot of questions about taking care of my hydrangea; It is an indoor one, in a pot (of course), and it was a gift I received about 3 months ago (so I believe it isn't very old, even though it was already blooming). I try to always maintain the temperature of the room that it is in between 15 and 22°c, I water it every two or three days (and if the leaves become limp because of the heat, I spray water on them), it is placed just under the window but is not directly exposed to sunlight, and I often open said window if the wind isn't too strong, in order for them to have fresh air. That's all I do. Is it enough ? I'm sort of worried now that it's autumn, the flowers and the leaves came to fall one by one, and now there is only one flower and a bunch of leaves hanging from bare branches.. (I don't know the variety of my hydrangea)

Your english is terrific. So i have a feeling you may have been gifted a hydrangea that was grown in a greenhouse and for holiday gifting purposes. A lot of times these hydrangeas are around near Easter and they are given as gifts but when we try to keep them going ourselves indoors or planted in a garden they don't always do well since they were babied in the greenhouse. I realize yours is still in the pot and this may also be a problem since the roots have probably grown a lot and are now most likely smushed in the pot. I would try transplanting it into a much larger pot and exposing it to full sunshine all winter. Good luck

Watching from Memphis, Tennessee. My hydrangeas are 5 years old and have bloomed every year. They are usually in full splendor by mid-June. This summer, for some reason, I only have a few blooms although the plants appear healthy and the leaves are very green. I did zero pruning from last year to this. The only thing I'm wondering about is that we had a particularly cool June. It hardly ever got above the mid-70s in the daytime and, at night, it would sometimes get down to the 40s. Very unusual. Could that be the problem?

Hello from Wisconsin! Zone 1 🤗 I'm cutting off the dead heads today, above the first set of leaves, but should i cover them for the winter? Last year i used a white mesh-like flower blanket. I'm afraid that they don't get enough hydration in the winter because of that, but I'm also afraid of the below freezing temps we get will kill off the roots. What should I do, leave them covered or not? I have Endless Blooms. They're only a couple years old, kinda small still. Also, what can i fertilize them with to get the blue color? I had no idea that you still should not prune the old wood on Endless Summer Hydrangeas. I somehow got the impression that I could cut all as much as I would like. But your explanations makes sense. Both my Annabelle and my endless summer have turned out to be beautiful as dried flowers and decorate my house and children’s houses!! I fill my kitchen window with them as a natural sunscreen with the most beautiful colors. My biggest question is now... can I prune in the fall instead of early spring?

It sounds like you have mastered the hydrangea game 👏👏🌸

The majority of the information I see online recommends pruning hydrangeas that need to pruned in late winter or early spring . However , I did read a few articles that said pruning in late fall through early spring is fine . I have pruned back my Annabelles in late fall and they did just fine the following year . The hydrangeas that have blooms coming in on new growth (like the Limelights and Annabelles ) are pretty easy to get blooms from even if you don’t prune them back at ideal times . They are very forgiving . I usually don’t prune mine back at all for a few years in a row and then may give them a pruning on year 3 or 4 if they look like they need a recharge .

I think the ones to be most careful about are the ones that bloom on the old wood like the endless summer and nikko hydrangea . As long as you don’t prune back their old wood at the wrong time you should be good. 🌸🤗

Just 'stumbled' across your video ( without even looking for it )
I live in a Artarmon ( a suburb of Sydney, Australia ) and we have two small Hydrangea's on the property we rent.
I had often wondered how to care for the plants not being a great gardener.
My Grandfather was a very keen gardener and grew the most amazing Hydrangeas at their home in Kallista in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne, Victoria.
As we are just the first few days into summer and we have a couple of small blooms coming on the plants seeing your video was just the most perfect timing and gave me more information to help our two plants.

I've had one that I pruned back to the ground every winter since we moved in (about 5 years). I get a huge, beautiful bush every year, but no blooms until summer's end. Now I know why! Hey Donna, timing is everything ! So happy you didn’t over prune your hydrangeas . Also happy to hear you have new growth on them . Your winters are a lot harsher then mine and this year most of my old wood stems had all of their spring buds frozen off so the old wood blooms won’t be happening for us this year . Our new growth is coming up though too praise God . 😊😊🌸

Great, concise and to the point...really appreciate that Kelly! I have some very old hydrangeas that mostly perform beautifully. However, they are so overgrown that they are blocking the walkway, and it seems any pruning I've done just makes them come back "bigger and better." Is there any way to drastically reduce their size without hampering blooming? Thanks

Hi Joanne, thank you for your kind comment . Sounds like you have a super healthy hydrangea that just wants to flourish . I think that you may need to consider moving this hydrangea since it sounds like this hydrangea will continue to get to that size each year . That’s their nature once they are happy . I live in Pensacola, FL. and I have several Endless Summer Hydrangeas in my front bed under my live oak. I never trim them, but they never seem to grow very big although they do bloom. I do fertilize them in the spring, but still do not get a lot of full growth. My spider hydrangea in my back yard is huge.

Hi Jean , maybe your fertilizer is making your soil to high in nitrogen. This will promote green leaves but inhibit bloom growth . Try doing a soil test to see if the level is high . If they are getting enough sun ( at least 6 hours ) and water and the nitrogen is fine then you may want to try pruning back 1/3 of the plant in late winter to give it a recharge . You won’t get the first burst of blooms on the old wood but the the new growth blooms should pop up end of summer . Then don’t prune back for the next few years and see what happens . Good luck 👍

Thanks for the video! I'm in southern CA and can't figure out how to get my hydrangeas big and tall like yours. I have no idea what variety they are, I just bought them at a gardening store 3 years ago on a whim and put them in the ground. They have survived and give off a fair number of blooms each year despite the intense heat in the summer/fall, but they are still only about 1.5 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide. Any ideas? I do a tiny bit of deadheading in the early spring when the old blooms are rotting. Maybe I shouldn't touch them at all?

@Kelly Lehman They started out blue, but changed to multi-colored, and now have purple/pink/blue blooms. We call them our "hy-strange-as." I read that it's due to what's in our soil.

Hi Jenn, there is a chance they are a dwarf variety of hydrangea. some hydrangeas grow in a more compact form and never get large . There arfe a lot of these varieties that have white flowers like BOBO and Little Lime . What color are yours? 🌺🙂

I’ve seen pictures of mansions in the Hamptons of Long Island that had giant hedges of hydrangeas as their focal point surrounding the front out line of the house . They were breathtaking ! 😊 Having lots of sun is great too. If there are areas that get morning sun and afternoon shade , that’s even better for hydrangea varieties like endless summer and annabelle. Consider adding a few Limelight Hydrangea too . They live full sun and are ridiculously gorgeous and low maintenance. Happy gardening 😊🌸

I have a question, I bought a house in 2016 with 2 beautiful hydrangea plants in front of it for good landscaping. However since Ive been here we have only received one or two blooms possibly four blooms a year. They were getting out of hand last year with growth so I had my landscaper cut them down really short. And this summer I have both growing beautifully with no black spots or burns on them. However only one of them bloomed this year. I have a bout 5 blooms on it. Im very New to gardening and would lile to know more. What is it in doing wrong? This video has helped some. I saved it. What can I do for the other Hydrangea to bloom? Will it not bloom at all this year? Shall I remove all dead wood completely?

I only have a few blooms now from old wood, but all the new wood is producing lush green leaves. Do you think they need more time to produce blooms as you mentioned? Hi Angela , have you considered putting chicken wire around your Endless Summer Hydrangeas and surrounding them with leaves for the winter ? This will protect the new buds from winter zap . Some people also use burlap to protect them .

The hydrangea blooms that come in on the new growth usually appear in late summer . They look similar to the first wave of blooms but the stems are longer and are made of fresh green new growth instead of the old wood .

Hello Kelly, Love your videos. I live in zone 5b. I have a Twist and Shout Hydrangea, I've had it for about 6 years now, the first two years it bloomed beautifully and I did cut it back and protected it from the cold winters by covering it with leaves and some mowed grass. It now has beautiful green foliage and it only gave me 3-4 blooms. What am I not doing right? How do I encourage more blooms? Also, could I septate this type of Hydrangea and replant it and if so when is the right time to separate? Thank you, new subscriber😊

They do great, but I’ve really wanted to try Endless Summer and have success with them. This video has encouraged me to try. Hi Kathy , terrific hydrangea question! So when i do prune, i wait until the end of winter and prune about 1/3 of the plant all the way around . i take garden clipper and just make my way around the plant cutting 1/3 of the height down . I do prune the plant in the early spring once I can tell which "old wood" is still viable. Some of it needs to go and you can generally tell by looking when the stems are dry. I just break them off . If it doesn't snap almost immediately, it is a viable stem. For me, it keeps the plant neater and still blooms are amazing all summer here in Northeast Georgia, USA.

Kelly, you are amazing! I've been looking for a video like this and have subscribed to you! I have a "dwarf limelight hydrangea" that is to get 3 - 5 feet tall, I've had them (6 of them) for two summers total. They bloom beautifully (lots of flowers) and I haven't touched them from a pruning perspective until this Spring (so nervous to do it), but felt I had to. I watched 500 (ok, that's an exaggeration, but it felt like it) videos on how to do this, but none addressed dwarf limelight specifically and the reason I felt I had to prune this Spring is because those beautiful flowers were so heavy, my bushes were splitting in the center and the branches all bending towards the ground and flowers were practically in the mulch. I planted these limelights in the back believing they would be taller than the rose bushes I have in the next layer and lilies in the front layer. What can I do to get them five feet tall and still blooming versus splitting and lying on the ground?? THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE! I will be looking up your links as well! xo

Hi Laurie , thank you for your kind comments . SInce Limelight hydrangea and little lime hydrangea both come in on new growth , you should be able to prune back 1/3 of the plant in late winter - early spring to keep the plant in check and cleaned up . I love these hydrangeas . I'll bet yours are gorgeous . 🌸👋😊

Stockton, CA. I had to prune my hydrangeas back down to the nubbins practically, because they were overtaken in late August by some kind of - I dont know what - blight or disease maybe - that caused the leaves to get big ugly brown spots on them. I was heartbroken to have to do it, and held my breath for this spring. Well, happy to report, the plant lives! It's about as high now with new growth as it was when I had to cut it back. I dont see any bloom sets, should I expect to see them by now in May? Do you suppose my plants may not bloom this year because I pruned them down so severely? How can I prevent them from getting that ugly stuff on them again?

Hi Ann , hooray for your new hydrangea growth👏👏👏🙏 . I have a feeling you will have gorgeous blooms on your new growth by mid summer . The earlier blooms we sometimes see in spring are usually in blooms set in the old growth but since you had to prune these back to get rid of the disease those won’t be here this season. Good call on your part though to prune them back . It’s hard for me to tell what kind of disease the plant may have had without seeing pictures of the brown spots on the leaves .

I used to do the same thing to my hydrangeas before I stumbled across the trick of not cutting them back every year . If it find the blooms start to look smaller and the stems are not as sturdy after a few years of not pruning , I’ll give them an early winter pruning just to recharge them. Southern Wisconsin here. I moved into a house that had a young hydrangea plant. That had pretty pink flowers. That fall, not knowing a thing about hydrangeas, I cut it to the ground ...ugh! After having it for 5 years, it has never bloomed again, but the plant itself looks very healthy with lush green leaves And grows taller every year. .Every year the stems seem to get tiny growths along the stems, but they never develop into anything. I was thinking these little buds may be what you refer to as trying to bloom on old wood? How can I get the plant to bloom?

Hey Emine, Well the good news is that you gave them a “recharge” by cutting them down. This means more energy will be put into the root and leaf systems since the hydrangea is not worried about creating and sustaining hydrangea flowers on the old wood stems you pruned back .

Even better news is that if this was an Endless Summer Hydrangea, you should get the second set of hydrangea flowers that come in on new growth at the end of summer . So it’s all good .

This may also translate in to better flowers next year. I actually give my hydrangeas a recharge pruning every 5-6 years if I see they are not producing as many hydrangea flowers as they used to .

Thank you so much for your kind reply, it’s a shot of sunshine for me too as for everyone it’s a tough call being in Lockdown.
However always trying to look on the bright side I am now forced to slow down, stay at home and for the first time to seriously look at my garden.
I am very lucky and privileged to have gardeners that come in twice weekly to do the maintenance but they need my enthusiasm, direction and approval to change things and plant, so this is what I am going to do. Between now and the autumn when I can start planting I intend to map out my garden with areas of difference hydrangea variétés and will certainly consider Limelight as you suggested, I love the Annabelle variety too and will check out the Endless variety thank you.
You also mention in one of your YouTube videos the Incredible variety which i believe you were going to plant, so hopefully you will have some feedback and advice on them this summer.
Lastly, my one concern is that during the winter months do the plants look like large clumps of twiggy brown sticks and thus not attractive and messy, so my current thoughts are to plant something evergreen, round shaped in front. Best wishes, Fleur x

I am new to hydrangeas. We bought the house 3 years ago and it came with a bush of hydrangeas. The first fall I trimmed the whole plant and as a result, we didn't see any flowers the following year on summer. At the end of that season, I did nothing and we got around 5 or 6 flowers, but they all were at the base of the plant, none on top. I'm curious to see what happens this year, but, any idea why all the flowers were only at the base? I also would like to add that we live in upstate NY. Thank you.

Hey flower friend 👋 thank you for your hydrangea question . Here are a few reasons why your hydrangeas may not be blooming in full force each year .

Take a good look at how they're sited. Hydrangeas generally need some sun and like some shade. In the South, nurseries grow them under pines or shade houses to filter sunlight. "For most hydrangeas, the farther north they are, the more sun they can stand," says horticulturist Michael Dirr. "In the South, they can get away with just three hours of sun." Hydrangeas in Southern gardens should be planted in locations with morning sun and afternoon shade; in the North they can do well in full sun as long as they get plenty of water and aren't subjected to dry winter winds. Temperature is as much an issue as sun, particularly for mopheads, which are susceptible to drooping from heat stress. They love a coastal setting, where breezes dissipate the heat, and thrive in the salty air. If full sun exposure and high heat are issues, you might try another old-time favorite, peegee hydrangea (H. paniculata 'Grandiflora'), which can withstand those conditions. If, on the other hand, your yard is short on sun, try oakleaf hydrangea, which prefers partial shade.

Another issue that can affect bloom is a late-spring or early-fall cold snap; the buds on bigleaf hydrangea (H. macrophylla) are particularly vulnerable because they flower on the previous year's growth. If unpredictable frosts are a problem where you live, consider two cold-hardy types: smooth hydrangea, which is native from New York to Florida and as far west as Arkansas; and peegee hydrangea, which is also the most drought tolerant. A popular native, H. arborescens is prized as a reliable bloomer in cold climates.
Last, consider how and when you prune. If you're cutting off more than just dead branches or spent blossoms in fall or early spring, you're removing the old wood, which carries the new season's buds for H. macrophylla "And I always use half the amount of fertilizer recommended on the label," says Dirr. "That way you'll be encouraging blooms and not more leafy.

I just discovered hydrangeas this summer and instantly fell in love with it. I have now 3 hydrangeas, all bought, however I am not sure what variety I have. I got them past summer, and usually after giving off a batch of flowers, I cannot seem to get them to bloom again since I do not know what variety I have. The videos I have been watching, the leaves does not seem to look like hydrangeas except for the flowers of course.

Hey Daisy, Thank you for checking in from the Philippines 👋🌍. There are so many different types of hydrangeas out there now. Some give only the one time bloom each season while others provide a season of blooms. I would go online and do a google search on hydrangeas by putting in as many of your plants characteristics as you can...color, size, bloom time. then put in a google image search and see if your hydrangea comes up. This way you will know if they should be giving you more blooms or not. Happy hydrangea growing 🌼🙂

Thank you so much for the video. I was driving last summer and a lady was selling them on the side of the road here in San Diego. I purchased two of them and had no idea on how to care for them but one did produce beautiful pink flowers and the other produce big white flowers.One died but the other just lost its flowers. Now they are growing again with bright green leaves. Wish me luck. The slugs are just a problem but I have something for them! 😜

Yay! Your only about 25 mins from me!! I have a 60+ year old hydrangea that used to look as beautiful as yours. About five years ago contractors moved it and it has not been the same since. It's still less than half the size, barely blooms and the leaves look hideous with brown spotting. I believe part of the problem is it's facing dead west now and should be moved but I'm afraid to touch it now. I'm so upset, this was planted by my grandfather and it had always been my favorite plant.

I have a gorgeous 3-year old "Topaz Sky" hydrangea in my Anchorage Alaska yard. To my horror, it was"pruned" by a moose late last summer and is now struggling to produce new growth from the root. It now has a cage around it!!

I bought a new hydrangea for my yard and it seems like half the stems are so flimsy (some have blooms and some don’t) it looks super healthy and the blooms are beautiful but half the stems and half the blooms are on the ground. Hi Meg, great hydrangea question 👍 You can use a plant support to get it lifted off the ground if you like . I have a feeling it just needs some time to get acclimated like you suspected . Make sure it has enough water but don’t overwater . I usually do a deep root watering wheat the soil near the base of the plant is dry . Good luck with your new hydrangea plant ! 👏❤️🌸🤗

Chicago. Great Video, even Landscapers make the mistake of cutting back hydrangeas. The workers cut them back to tidy up the lawn in fall or in Spring thinking it will stimulate growth & blooms. What commercial fertilizer should I use on my Endless Summer H. ? What chemical do I use to keep them Blue? Is there Good organic alternatives? My Endless Summer seem to be getting enough Sun, because they wilt on Hot/Sunny days. I water a little at the base at 11:00 am.and again at 3:00pm. Thanks for any advice.

Greetings from Chicago. Happy to see this great video from my home Garden State. Two years ago, I over pruned and got zero blooms. Last winter I stared at the ugly skeletons all season, but was rewarded with super growth, fullness, and more blooms. I am hoping to find a middle ground this year. Super hydrangeas questions you just asked 👏 . The best time to transplant your hydrangea is fall . Make sure you have at least six weeks for the plant to get reestablished before the ground freezes.
The best way to tell the difference between a Nikko and an endless summer , is that the endless summer should have a second set of blooms appearing mid to late summer from fresh green stems from the base of the plant ( not connected to any old wood) . The Nikkos and endless summer both have blooms from old wood that appear in early summer but only the endless summer hydrangeas get this second burst of hydrangea blooms later in the summer .
