City Sparks
Dead Snares Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

City sparks
Hidden light you know
Everybody lives the lie

Hey
Let's step into the darkness
Hey
Let's stare into the light

City sparks
Hidden light you know
Everybody lives the lie
City sparks
Empty as they glow
Everybody is a liar

Everybody is a liar

In chains
We march into the darkness
In chains
We're drug into the light

The world doesn't understand it
Religion is tired
Baby I know you are inspired

You're a child
Who's running from the darkness
I'm a child
Who's running from your light

City sparks
Hidden light you know
Everybody lives a lie
City sparks
Empty as they glow
Everybody is a liar

Oh

Everybody is a liar
Everybody is a liar

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "City Sparks" by Dead Snares touch upon themes of deception, duality, and the struggle between light and darkness. The repeated phrase "City sparks, hidden light you know, everybody lives a lie" suggests that there is a facade or hidden truth within the city, and it implies that everyone is living a lie in some way. The lines "Let's step into the darkness" and "Let's stare into the light" reveal a certain fascination with exploring both ends of the spectrum, suggesting that there may be something to be gained from embracing darkness and light.

The repetition of "In chains, we march into the darkness" and "In chains, we're drug into the light" suggests a sense of entrapment or forced participation in both darkness and light. It implies that society or external forces have a hand in dictating our actions and choices, leading us down paths we may not fully understand. The line "The world doesn't understand it, religion is tired" hints at a disillusionment with societal norms and religious dogma.

The final lines, "You're a child who's running from the darkness, I'm a child who's running from your light," suggest a personal struggle between two individuals. It highlights the idea that sometimes we can be both drawn to and repelled by someone else's energy or presence, just as we are simultaneously running from darkness and drawn to the light.

Overall, "City Sparks" offers a reflection on the dual nature of human existence, the masks we wear to fit in, and the struggle to find authenticity in a world of deception and hidden truths.

this is a really cool video and I'm glad you're spotlighting a great record. Dead Snares isn't the collab between Jeffrey and Steve however, that's Isidore. Dead Snares is a Jefferey Cain project though I think that Steve Kilbey may do some vocal work here.

Thanks Brian. You're correct. Isidore is more of a collaboration of SK and JC than Dead Snares, but that's definitely Kilbey on some vocal tracks. I could change the description to a degree. Jeffrey told me a few years ago when he saw the As Above So Below video, that they cut this record around 2004-ish, so I assume the late Gregory Slay was on drums.
