Real & True
Dead by April Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are pushing my patience, so there's no know
I'm sick and tired of being denied all by you
Hurting me (hurting me)
Breaking me (breaking me)
Hurting me (hurting me)
Burning me

'Cause what you see is real and true
You can't take that away from me
No matter what you do
You can't take that away from me
Won't let it slip away
Witnessed too much to me
'Cause what you see is real and true

I will do nothing to break down what I've built up
I will do whatever it takes to make this stop
Hurting me (hurting me)
Breaking me (breaking me)
Hurting me (hurting me)
Burning me

I won't let it go

'Cause what you see is real and true
You can't take that away from me
No matter what you do
You can't take that away from me
Won't let it slip away
Witnessed too much to me
'Cause what you see is real and true

You see things from a different point of view
Why should I listen?
Why should I let you in?
Why should I even trust you?
We are like two different worlds apart
Won't let you in, always wait for remain
Why should I even trust you

Hurting me (hurting me)
Breaking me (breaking me)
Hurting me (hurting me)
Burning me (burning me)

I won't let it go

'Cause what you see is real and true
You can't take that away from me
No matter what you do
You can't take that away from me
Won't let it slip away
Witnessed too much to me
'Cause what you see is real and true

Real and true

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dead by April's song "Real & True" are about a person who refuses to be brought down by someone who keeps hurting them, denying them, and breaking them. The person is pushed to their limit and is tired of being burned by the other person. However, the singer states that what they see is real and true and that cannot be taken away from them. They have witnessed too much and have worked hard to build what they have, and they won't let it be destroyed by anyone. The person is determined to do whatever it takes to make the pain stop, but they won't let go of the truth they know.

The second verse describes the person's unwillingness to listen to the other person's point of view because they consider themselves from two different worlds apart. The singer questions why they should even trust the person who has been hurting them. The chorus repeats that what they see is real and true, and no matter what the other person does, they can't take it away from them. The song ends with the person's resolve to hold onto what they've built and not let it slip away.
